Pumas Expected To Grab Share '41 Conference Title Indianapolis, Oct. 12. St. Joseph's college's Pumas today are within one victory of at least a share of the Indiana Conference football championship and if they fall to reach the promised land it will be one of the season's major' upsets in this state. The Pumas, coached by Joe rjien- hart, marked up their second league victory Saturday by beating previously undefeated Central 20 to 0.

Starting next Saturday i they'll be engaged! in non-confer-j ence games until Thanksgiving.Day when they take on a weak Valparaiso outfit. As usual, it was Varini and Nick Scollard who sparked the Puma victory Saturday. Varini scored two touchdowns and he and Scollard now have played every minute of all of St. Joe's four games this season. DePauw and Rose Poly maintained their places in a first position tic with the Pumas but the defeat by St.

Cardinals Score The final Bear touchdown came on a 53-yard pass gain from Ray Nolting to Bob Swisher, the receiver running the last 20 yards. The Cards finally dented the Bear defense midway of the last period with a 47-yard march. Goldberg sparked the attack to the 17 and John Martin raced through center for the touchdown and Bill Daddio place kicked the point. Cardinals momentum. Wabash, beaten by Rose Poly in its first league start, broke into the conference victory column on the strength of a last quarter drive which produced two touchdowns and a 14 to 6 triumph over Earlham. Freddie Cochrane Asks Manager Be Reinstated Threatens to Bolt Fight on Oct. 31 Summit, Oct. 12. Welterweight Champion Freddie (Red) Cochrane said today he had advised i the New York state athletic com- mission he will not go through with non-title bout against Ray Rob- I inson scheduled for Madison Square 1 Garden Oct. 31 unless manager, Willie Gilzenberg, is reinstated.

Cochrane came here Saturday to go into training for the bout at M. E. Bey's can! p. Gilzenberg was suspended for six months by the commission last Tuesday on the grounds he had ordered his fighter to "coast" during his one-sided victory the night before over Lew Jenkins. Cochrane said he had been informed the commission wanted him to sign new contracts for the Robinson bout but that he had wired the commission chairman.

Gen. John J. Phelan, that all his business affairs would have to be discussed with Gilzenberg. "Please be advised," his wire read, "that if my manager is not reinstated I will consider myself suspended along with him and will not go through with the fight on the 31st. Oct. 12 Jimmy Wilburn, Portland, speedster, set a -new world's record for the 25-mile dirt-track race here today and won the Dixie Sprint championship of the National dirt- track circuit.

Wilburn drove 25 miles over High Point speedway's banked mile course at a speed of better than 100 miles an hour and finished ahead of the field in 15 minutes 38 and 42-100 seconds, more than two minutes under the old mark, set in Minneapolis by Gus Schrader. Star Purdue Back Cracks Facial Bone Lafayette, Oct. 12--(ff)-The Purdue University football physician said today John veteran left halfback, a cracked facial bone and would be unable to play for at least two weeks. Galvin was hurt Saturday scrimmage against the fresh- nen. It was uncertain whether full- jack John Petty and right half- jack Marion (Red) Carter would be able to start against Ohio State next Saturday. Both were hurt in the Pittsburgh game.

Ervin Township Downed 13 to 3 At Highland Park; Cutting down all opposition with a relentless viciousness, the Greentown high school baseball club ended the 1941 fall season Friday afternoon at Highland park by whipping Ervin township 10-3 for the Howard i'county championship to keep the season's record spotless. Postponed from earlier in the month, the Grecntown-Ervin game was played as the climax to round robin tournaments in the East and West divisions of the Howard county conference. Greentown was the winner of the four-team Eastern Division and Ervin was titalist in the Western section's five-team competition. Both played their scheduled games without defeats. Friday afternoon the Greentown boys of Coach Earl Ervin marched through the Ervin boys with Cannon taking credit for the victory.

His hurling gave only six hits and fanned five. His support was outstanding, Kurtz and Loman in fine defensive perform- nces. Bennett, Ervin starting pitcher, was wild, leaving the hill in the sixth in. favor of Wolfe. Stepler's ong hit to right cleaned the bases send the starter to the bench.

Bennett walked eight and fanned four while Wolfe whiffed one and sent two to first. Both Cannon and Bennett hit batters. After Ervin took a 1-0 lead in the top the second, the Eastern champions slammed back in their half with a pair of runs to take the game in hand. Kelly was the outstanding batteryman for Ervin, working steadily behind the bat for losers and cutting down every Greentown try for stolen bases. In he- slammed out a long double in the eighth that went to the right field fence.

Pitcher Bennett also had a double. During the season the Greentown club Avon five games in the Howard conference and one with Clay of Miami. Indiana Heavy Team Wins World's Title In Pulling Contest Troy, Oct. heavyweight team, Dick and Jim, owned by Ulva Michael of Montpelier, won the world championship pulling trophy today by dragging a 6,000 pound retractable weight 17 feet. The winning pull was five feet better than that of the second place team owned by Dan A.

Arnold of Plainwell, Mich. The defending champion team of Dr. William Crall of Pioneer, finished third. The lightweight championship went to Bob and Jim, owned by Durlint Moyer of Greensfork. for pulling A 5,500.

Burns tonight Baseball Commissioner M. Landis, suffering from bronchial pneumonia in Little Traverse hospital, was "considerably improved." The physician said Landis would be confined to the hospital for about .10. more days. Ellcr, If Champion Midget Race Driver Killed Thompson, Oct. Tony Willman, 37, of Milwaukee, national midget car dirt track champion of only 'one week, was killed today during a race when he was thrown into the path of another speeding car. Willman, whose wife was among the 12,000 spectators, was tosSed when the rear of his car apparently locked and the vehicle crashed into a guard rail with tremendous force.
