But in spitej of its fine acting, the objective method of its unfolding causes the story to lose some of its emotional appeal.

Because of its originality, however, and because of the fine acting and direction, "The Power and the Glory" deserves to be placed among the most distinguished pictures of the year. CHILDHOOD PALS OF MALIN PAY FINAL TRIBUTE Friends of the old neighborhood who knew him as John Malinaus-kas, choir boy, rather than as Jean Malin, the sharp-tongued Broadway hot spot favorite, comprised the large majority of the 150 mourners at funeral services for the master of ceremonies yesterday. The Rev. Father Sylvester Rem-eika said mass for Malin, drowned in a Hollywood motor accident, in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Roebling and South 4th St. Brooklyn.

Only a few Broadway friends of Malin were present. Francis Dunn, stage and screen actor, was a pallbearer. The friends and relatives followed the body to Trinity Cemetery, Brooklyn. Mrs. Jack Sedoris, sister of Malin, revealed that only a few days before he was killed she received a letter from him saying: "I am coming home from Hollywood for a long rest." That evening Garner's old and faithful secretary, Henry, relates Tom's story to his wife in order to make her understand that be wasn't a man to be feared and hated, but one to be pitied. As the narrator talks the story is unfolded, not in chronological order, but as the important events in Tom's life occur to Henry and he re-creates them for his wife. He tells her, for instance, about the suicide of Tom's wife, Sally, and thereupon the scene immediately preceding Sally's tragic death and the death itself are shown in sequence on the screen. Then follows a series of events in the lives of Tom and Sally when they were young.

Henry recalls how Tom courted Sally when he was a walker for the railroad and she was the teacher in the little country -echoolhouse. He tells how Sally taught Tom to read and write and filled him with ambition to work his way to the top. Then the story of Tom's second marriage is related in the same way. Henry tells of an event her and one there which led up to Tom's suicide, and not all of the events fall in their natural sequence.
