Thursday approximately 2,500 trees in the borough were uprooted, hurled to the streets and hauled out of the way by six busy police emergency squads. Emergency Crews Rushed. Working like sailors battling a hurricane, the emergency crew workers went about the borough lashing down everything movable, clearing streets, sawing up fallen trees and opening storm sewers. The new roadway, running parallel to the present Manhattan-bound lane, will relieve congestion at both ends of the bridge. It will be paved with wood tar blocks or asphalt and is expected to be opened within the next few weeks. Work of removing the tracks has already progressed to the Williamsburg, Brooklyn, entrance, and the paving will follow immediately. Williamsburg civic organizations, including the Grand Street Board of Trade, have been backing the project.

Philip N. Bender, chairman of the Board of Trade, said yesterday that the new roadway will relieve most of 'the traffic problems of the bridge.
