New York, Aug. dwindled to around the half million share mark on the stock market today and prices moved irregularly. Selective buying in various sections of the list produced a few sizeable gains. However, pivotal Issues fluctuated over a small arc.

More activity developed in amusement shares. Time Square and Hollywood interests were said to be buyers. Paramount was active at a small net gain while Loew's roac more than a point. Motors and steels continued relatively active, but price movements were indecisive. Rails showed small losses.

Heavy-losing exceptions included New York, Chicago St. Louis (Nickel Plate) Isaues which broke 3 to 4 points in the stock section and to more than i points in bonds on announcement and road would default September 1 interest on iV4 per cent bonds, due 1978. Pere Marquctte stock 3 points and Chesapeake which controls Nickel Plate, had a weak period. Some building: Issues were In demand. American Radiator was active at a small gain.

Johns-Man- villc rose more than 3 points on a few sates. International Harvester had gain or more than 2 points on reports its foreign business would hold around lout year's levels although domestic business is expected to show a 30 per cent decline. American Smelting was up nearly 2 points. Other coppers were barely changed. Macy, up more than a point, featured department store stocks.
