R.EM, picked up a number of MTV awards that didn't seem to have much to do with their primary expertise choreographers, special effects artists, editors and cinemato-, graphers sat through the spectacle. As for being the best group video, maybe. But did the group members conceptualize the video, dictate the scenes and shots, set up the lighting (and, lest we forget, perform the award-winning editing)? Or did they just show up and mouth the words to the song? "The awards are for the band and for the (people behind the scenes)," explained Tina Exarhos, manager of program publicity for MTV, when questioned as to why R.E.M.

received an award for what was undeniably a group effort. She said that she couldn't answer questions about the philosophy behind the awards. Exarhos pointed to the technical awards as adequate recognition for the directors and technicians. ome of those awards were Best Choreography "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," Music Factory (maybe they do choreograph their own videos); Best Special Effects "Falling to Pieces," Faith No More (hmmm, maybe they're multi-talented fellows), and others that seem to indicate these musicians have pursued diverse careers in search of fame. for Ford with Paramount Pictures to begin a new motion picture franchise starring as author Tom Clancy's protagonist Jack Ryan.

The first picture in the series will be "Patriot Games," based on Clancy's best-selling novel. Principal photography will begin In November, it was announced Thursday by David Kirkpatrick, president of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures. What useful purpose do they serve? The difference between MTVs spectacle and other music awards shows is obvious MTVs catering to an audience that either doesn't care about excellence, or doesn't understand it. The powers at MTV chose to create an award that stands for popularity. Without a cavalcade of stars and Prince's naked butt there would be no show. As it is. the MTV trophy is hardly a valued knicknack.

Instead, it's a meal ticket. Who profited from the show? Certainly MTV did it was hyped for weeks, and rebroadcast through syndication, airing locally on WOLF Channel 38 this week. So, too, did the artists. After all, the awards go to videos that MTV plays videos MTV chooses to play, and places In heavy rotation. The winners are chosen by panel of about 1 ,000 producers and directors of videos, record labels, and journalists, from videos aired on MTV.

Make no mistake about it music television is about television, not music. When R.E.M. stepped up to accept the Best Group Video award, they thanked mom, their fans and college radio not MTV, strangely enough, or what's-his-name, the director. Perhaps what's really needed at the MTV Awards is a trophy for the Best Lip-sync In a Music Video. LAST CALL! HAWAII OCTOBER 9 TO 19 A FABULOUS TRIP! No legitimate awards program would give the subject of a work more -recognition than the artist receives? Not so.

Last week's MTV Awards placed credit for video achievements squarely on the shoulders of the performers the subjects of the works. Reports following the event said that the group R.E.M. took six trophies for the video to "Losing My Religionr including Best Group Video, Direction, and Editing. Best direction? The real director, Tarsem, sat in the audience during the awards show as the winner of that category was announced. The awards presenter put it this way "R.E.M.
