the Howard County ispital, a step taken at the opening of the current month, because of tha failure of financial support of the institution. Under Mrs. Mavlty's superintend-' ency, the Howard County hospital had strictly high-grade administration. Its service was kept at top standard, at all times. Order, discipline and system obtained.in every department.

Under more economic conditions, the institution, under the kind 'of administration Mrs. Mavity gave it, doubtless would have achieved a financial success as well as a service success. The impression Kokomo has acquired of Mrs. Mavity' is distinctly complimentary to her. He said he felt that to Issue the checks now would not be'of sufficient importance to creditors to warrant it The county officers naturally will sign the checks immediately upon the reopening of the banks, and were hopeful Saturday that permission to resume banking activities will be given the country early next week. Within tbe next few weeks some person have earned, probably for the first time in history, thc title 01' Howard County checker champion. Arrangements for holding of a tournament at which such a champion may be selected are now being completed and it was definitely, announced Saturday that such an event would be held, probably on April 24.

The tournament is to be conducted by the Howard County Checker club which has for several months been promoting local in- tcrsst in the game and conducting regular monthly tournaments. Membership in the club is open to anyone, residing in this vicinity, annual regardless of playing- ability. Its Vallcj aim is to stimulate interest in the game and to assiot and encourage Its members to become more proficient players. Tournrys Open (o All. Although all tlio rules and conditions to govern the championship tournament have not yet been, completed, it is planned to restrict candidates Tor this event to those who have won at least one of thc regular monthly tournaments conducted by the club during thc winter season.

Another of these tournaments is in progress and is open to any player in thc county. Play is conducted each Monday evening at the south side fire station, on Home avenue. Any player of the county who has not yet affiliated with the club and who may desire to participate in the championship tournament is urged to enter the present competition. Should he fail to win top place in the present March tournament, he will still have another opportunity to climb into the list of candidates for the county title by participation in thc last tournament of. the current season, which will open March 27 and close April 17.

Trophy for Winner. Winner of the county championship tournament will be presented with a suitable trophy, a cup having been promised, sometime ago to the county champion by Mayor Henry Quigley. Members of the. club say that while the prize will not be elaborate or expensive, it will be in good taste and something; which the winner may well be proud to possess. To the present time, only three players have qualified to compete ior the county championship.

These F. S. Bell, who headed thc tournament list for three consecutive months, Earl Turner, and C. M. Arnett.

It is possible that two more names may be added to this list before the championship tournament opens. At the present time, O. Sater of near Greentown and Turner arc tied for the top position. Two weeks of play yet remain in which this tie may be broken or in which some dark horse may enter tournament and snatch the honor from both. In the April tournament, which will follow thc March event, will be another opportunity for some player to climb into thc competition for the county championship.
