Avalon senior wins $500 scholarship WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1971--NEWS-RECORD --1 Ross JUS lists top pupils Susan Lynn Johnson, an Avalon High School senior, has won a $500 nursing scholarship presented a a by North Boroughs Woman's and Junior 'Woman's clubs. and Mrs. R. W. Johnson, 822 Florence Avalon. She is one of seven children.

She has been employed after school as a dental assistant. Last year, she attended Alfred W. Beattie Technical School, and still found time to include the following activities in her schedule: National Honor Society, chorus, band. Girls' Athletic Association, Spanish Club and Pen and Key. Miss Maxine Ann Heasely placed second in the contest.

Shaler, is of student council. She was class president in her sophomore and junior years. She ranks first in her class and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is a basketball team captain. Chris, daughter of and Mrs.

NA chess team defeats Shaler Chess players from North Allegheny High School have defeated the Shaler Chess Team 3V 2 to IVz to end the first half of the league schedule. The match was the first time Shaler had been defeated in the past six competitions. Captain Paul Cornelius was the only i a a a Moczydlowski played to a draw. The next match for Shaler will be with Bellevue. Chess enthusiasts are at the Shaler team's sessions Fridays at 7 Room 260, Shaler High School.

Youth toTTTFTrist Jerome Polewski, 37 Bateman Millvale, is president of the National Honor Society and Glee Club and is secretary of the Future Teacher's and Folk clubs. She ranks second in the class, and is a member of Gimbel's Teen Board. Evie, president of the senior class, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gross.

1119 Evergreen Millvale. She ranks third scholastically among the seniors, and is coeditor of the yearbook. Sebastian spellers among best St. Sebastian School. 307 Siebert Road, Ross, boasts three of the top spellers in the "Buhl Planetarium spelling competition.

Fifth grader Nancy Irr, daughter of and Mrs. Robert E. Irr. 8027 Brittany Place, McCandless. r'aced second and runner-up to the Alfred Metz.

Nancy failed to correctly spc 11 the word, poliomyelitis. She received a Thorndike-Barnhart dicttonary from the sponsors of the bee. -Nancy was Ihe-youngest the Sebastian top winners. Youth for Christ (YFC) of Greater Pittsburgh will meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Soldiers S.

Memorial Hall. Oakland, Terry Walker of Penn Hills, the new head of YFC's Campus Life division, will be featured speaker. Folk music and some surprises will be included in the program. Teens are supposed to wear their grubbies because they'll be sitting on the floor. Chairs will be provided for adults.

Judith Bugrin, a seventh grader and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bugrin, 101 Townview Shaler, placed fourth after she missed the word, alliteration. Seventh grader Karen Mashburn. daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Robert Mashburn, 122 Cardiff Road, Ross, placed sixth. She couldn't spell the word, Sister Robertine. Nancy's coach, will be a judge in the national spelling bee to be held in Washington in May. Eighth graders at Ross Junior High School the graders two to one on the highest honor roll this report period.

Frank Alvernia honors 3 seamstresses The three top seamstresses in home economics class at Mount Alvernia High School have been selected First place is Linda Thomas, second is Ginny Feitl and third is LaVerne Burgunder. Linda, who modeled a skirt and jacket in a school fashion show, recently placed second in a fashion show sponsored by a woman's guild in Bellevue. Ginny modeled a tailored, double- breasted Jacket with matching pants. She has been named Homemaker of Tomorrow at Mount Alvernia.

LaVerne modeled a coat and dress. The school fashion show, "Fashion Routes of '71." was narrated by Chris Polewski.
