The Billings Gazette ELECTION '92 Thursday. November 5. 1992 3B SENATE CONTESTED RACES MazureEc as new AG set to bade local law Cooney: Voters liked the record I HELENA (AP) Democrat Joe Mazurek of Helena says that maintaining strong support services for local law enforcement agencies will be his top priority as Montana's new attorney general Mazurek, state Senate president the past two years, defeated former state Rep. Jack Sands of Billings in Tuesday's election. Final unofficial returns showed Mazurek with 221,469, or 57 percent, while Sands had 168,054, or 43 percent Mazurek said other major issues he will face when he takes over the office in January will be gambling on Indian reservations and school funding lawsuits.

"In terms of me stepping into office, the most pressing issue will be to prepare for the 1993 legislative session and set budget priorities," he said in an interview after his victory. "Most importantly, I'm excited about the job. I cant wait to hit the ground running," he said. "I feel there are a lot of issues important to the future of Montana that will be dealt with by the Department of Justice." Mazurek and Sands, both lawyers, said during the campaign that they support the death penalty and oppose any expansion of gambling. Mazurek portrayed himself as a mainstream leader, while saying Sands' time in the Legislature "was more marked by being outside the mainstream, more narrow in his perspectives in some cases even extreme." Sands said as a Republican legislator he favored less taxing and less spending than Mazurek.

"But we must strive to make this state even better," Cooney said Tuesday night Cooney defeated Republican challenger Robert Werner, a Helena painting contractor making his first bid for public office. Final unofficial totals gave Cooney had 248,132 votes, or 64 percent, to Werner's 139,594, or 36 percent. "I know that what we've done in the past is one of the main reasons people re-elected me," Cooney said after his victory. "But there's still a lot of work to do.

"One of the first things is to get the newly elected people together, both Democrats and Republicans, and get down to business talking about things as a team working together." Cooney, a two-term legislator in the 1970s, argued during his campaign that voters should retain him so he could build on achievements of the last four years. But Werner argued that the secretary of state's office needs to be "far more visible and dynamic." Not 67 Live Music Mon-Sat 109 N. ww at the r. 4 HELENA (AP) The new state auditor, Democrat Mark O'Keefe of Helena, says there may need to be a shift of emphasis in the duties of the investigative staff in the office. But he also says he plans to meet with current Auditor Andrea "Andy" Bennett to find out her thoughts about how things might be changed and improved. O'Keefe, a 40-year-old natural resources and political consultant, defeated Republican Fred Thomas and Libertarian J. Eric Larson, both of Stevensville, in a three-way race Tuesday.

"I thought it was a good, hard-fought race with some good candidates who the public had to choose from," O'Keefe said shortly after his victory. "Candidly, I am disappointed," Thomas said. "This is a very important office, and its functioning well is very important to all Montanans." O'Keefe will succeed Bennett, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in the Republican primary election last May. Final unofficial returns gave O'Keefe 214,444, or 55 percent; Thomas had 159,490, or 41 percent; and Larson had 15,873, or 4 percent The auditor regulates the insurance and securities industries and serves on the state Land Board, which manages state lands held in trust for the public schools.
