Two years old on Sunday, July 30. If yon had a baby horn on the snme day ns Uin WAVKS, and that baby grew as fast as this naval orgnnb.ntion, it is estimated thnt your young 'im would eat 70 pounds of meat, dozen O'J pounds of vegetables and a full box of vilamin pills daily. To give you a real idea of the WAVF.S' phenomenal growth.

just remember that it, took the United States Navy (the men, that, is) Ml years l.o grow the niiinorieal strength now boasted by the "Women's Keservo strong There are a lot of reasons why enlistments in the WAVES keep booming. The main one, I think, is that old text-book recipe for success in any Held: "Keep Your Customers Happy." I doubt if any two women join the WAVES for the snnifi identical reason. One WAVE joined to avenge her brother who was killed at Tarawa. Another joined because she just grew tired of meaningless job sorting stuff. Still another wanted to fulfill a lifetime ambition to travel.

And so it goes. 80.000 WAVES reasons for enlisting. The Navy has had to make, good 80,000 times to fulfill the promise in the mind of each new recruit. And it has. That's why the AVomen's Reserve grows so fast.

AVA.VKS toll other women who become WAVES who tell other women who become. AVAA'ES (is our needle AVe would like to make good on your reason for joining the AVAA'ES. But we can't make oven start unless yon stop In at the Navy Recruiting Station, Tost Office Building, Bakersfield, and give us a chance. To get to the other side of the picture, a little survey was conducted recently to determine why eligible women did not want to join the AVAA'ES. The results were astounding.

Of course, the greater number of women who wore asked. "Why aren't you in the WAVES?" responded with irrefutable reasons having to do with age, dependency, physical condition. But of those were eligible for enlistment, many claimed that they "couldn't afford to enlist he- Cflvtse they couldn't live on $50.00 per month Evidently we have been amiss in our dissemination of information regarding pay of Xary and we want to correct that right now. The table below shows the actual earnings of various ratings of AVAA'ES. In addition, WAVES receive clothing, medical and denial care free. There are no salary deductions, no income tax, no victory tax. And the I. "Bill of Rights" will provide mustering out pay. employment insurance, college tuition and allowances, loan arrangements after the war.

Now we hope that no one will worry about living on a total income of a month if they join the WAVES. HEALTH QUIZ I TIS NO Do you have poor digestion? Do you fool hoidacny after eating? Do you get sour or uoset easily? I Do you foel tired-listless? Do you feel headachy and upset due to poorly digested food? To feel cheerful and happy again your food must be digested properly. Each day, Nature must produce about two pints of a vital digestive juice to help digest your food. If Nature fails, your food may remain leaving you headachy and irritable. Therefore, you must increase the flow of this digestive juice. Carter's Little Liver Pills increase this flow quickly often in as little as 30 minutes.

And, you're on the road to feeling better. Don't depend on artificial aids to counteract Carter's Little Liver Pills aid digestion after Nature's own order. Take Carter's Little Liver Pills as directed. Get them at any drugstore. Only and STATE G.

City in Ruins Llvorno was reported in ruins, more thoroughly smashed than any town yet attacked by the Allied Fifth Army. The American forces already had by-passed It in a rush up the Arno valley plain sight of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Although pushed out of Llvorno, the Germans took up positions on high ground north of the city and sent a continuous barrage on Livorno's 60 docks. Even as the shells exploded, however, American engineers were rebuilding the city's battered harbor facilities, which are to prove of enormous value to the Allies as a supply center. Climaxes Long Drive The capture of Livorno climaxed a vigorous Allied drive over tortuous mountain terrain which made possible a pincer movement on Italy's third largest peacetime port.

Much of the success of the capture could be attributed to American engineers who cleared the infantry's path of mines and booby traps and built bridges. A military spokesman described the battlefield as pock-marked with "minefields as thick as wheat along some roads and which we had to cross." Ancona fell yesterday afternoon to Polish units of the Eighth Army as the culmination of their 75- mile advance in the last few weeks. The Germans had concentrated two divisions to defend the anchor base with a peacetime population of The Poles badly mauled the divisions and took more than 2000 prisoners. The whole eastern wing of the German defenses crumpled. Other elements of the Eighth Army took Ofl'anga.

8 miles southwest of Ancona, after a tough fight lusting several days. Other towns which fell included Camerano, 3'ij miles from the coast: Patcrno d'Ancona, 6 miles southwest of the namesake town; and Agugliano, south of Patcrno. United States battleships moved in close Sunday to speed the reduction of Guam as a strong base in the wpstcrn Pacific approaches of Tokyo. On the thirteenth consecutive day of air and warship attack on this biggest island in the Marianas group, which also includes conquered Sai- pan, the big rifles of America's new battlewagons fired from close range on defenses which might hinder landing attempts.

Admiral Chester Nimitz reported yesterday the Sunday bombardment failed to arouse answering fire from the enemy. Destroyers let go at ack- ack guns firing on planes spotting targets for the battleships. General Douglas MacArthur's men steadily whittled away Japanese sea strength by sinking or damaging four more cargo vessels in the southwest Pacific. The Japs have been slipping troop-laden vessels, ammunition and fuel into the Ilalmahcra area lately, suggesting enemy concern MacArthur may soon move against this island guarding the Philippines. Halmahera lies northwest of New Guinea, most of which the Allies control.

MacArthur announced today that 787 Japanese were killed in recent vain attempts to break free of the Allied pocket near Aitape, New Guinea. Chinese forces battled with grim desperation to hold Hengyang, Chungking said, penetrating enemy positions near the important rail city and inflicting heavy losses on another force miles south of Heng- yang. The latter Japanese force, which bypassed Hengyang in a grab at control of the Hankow-Canton railway, shows "signs of collapse," Chungking reported. Japanese trying to rescue an isolated garrison at Pingka, Salween river village near Lungling on the Burma Road, were defeated and forced to retreat, the Chinese high command said. The Chinese need Lungling to make possible the reopening of the Burma Road.

In monsoon-drenched northern Burma General Stilwell's Allied forces moved forward another 200 yards into Nyitkyina, part of which they have taken from stubborn Japanese defenders. Along with Tokyo's admission of Saipan's fall, Admiral Nimitz disclosed that the American victory there had yielded 1620 soldier prisoners. CONDITION SATISFACTORY The condition of Nancy Phillips, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wray Phillips, badly burned Sunday when she ran into the flames of her burning home at Shatter in search of her mother, was reported as "satisfactory" at Mercy Hospital today.
