Hallman nas kindly turned over to the Telegraph for research in connection with its centennial anniversary a condensed history in the shape of a mercantile directory of Dauphin county for 1875 76. It originally was the property of the late Alderman G. W. Jackson, widely known throughout the city. A glance through this old directory shows how far on the way Harrisburg has come since the centennial year (1876).

In the introductory to the book Is again raised the question as to proper spelling of the name Paxtang. We quote: "The first white settlement at this place, the site of an Indian village called Pixtan, Pextang or Paxton, was made 1719, by an Englishman named John Harris, who in 1733 obtained from the proprietor of Pennsylvania a grant of 300 acres of land near his residence and purchased of other grantees 509 acres adjoining. He carried on a considerable trade with the Indians in the vicinity."
