THE SNOW WASSET Pure white, the Snow Wasset was stranded in the northern United States after the last ice age and spends most of its time hibernating. But when seen, mostly in Minnesota and northern Idaho, the wasset Is slithering across the ice after poorly adapted animals and woodsmen.

The Wasset howl, like the icy wind of a winter storm, is heard to this day in Idaho backwoods. THE HUGAG The prehistoric Hugags of Montana, Idaho and northern Minnesota are no more. The clumsiest, but most lovable, beast to roam the Northwest died during the 1930s. It had a shaggy coat with floppy ears and jointless legs that made it impossible to lie down. During the "Terrible Storm of 1936," Hugags were toppled by winds and starved to death when they couldn't right themselves.

By The Aorlited Presi Snow Wassets, furry creatures with the head of a polar bear and a sea lion torso, slither through the frozen forest and gobble up stranded woodsmen. The Whirling Whimpus ambushes victims by twirling, helicopter style, at a blind corner and distracting the unlucky with a low droning noise. But Hugags are lovable beasts, or were lovable until the last one flopped over in a snowstorm and starved to death. Nay-sayers may scoff at the tales of Mugags and Snow Wassets. But William Cox and fellow loggers know better.

Cox cataloged the logging beasts in 1910, in a volume recently rediscovered by Potlatch Corp. and dedicated to the "Concatenated Order of Hoo-Hoo and all who know the fellowship of the woods." Loggers know the tales well. But for newcomers, here's a look at Cox's beasts: THE AGROPELTER One of the most feared of forest beasts, the Agropel-ter preys on loggers for sport. An apelike animal, it has a slender body and arms like whiplashes. It hides in hollow logs, holding a bare limb like an extension of a dead tree.

When an unsuspecting woodsman passes, the beast swings, conks him over the head with its long arm and lets out a hyena laugh. THE WHIRLING WHIMPUS The Whirling Whimpus, which dwells in Arkansas forests, has a gorilla body with enormous forearms and tiny hind legs. With arms extended, the whimpus whirls like a top on its pointy feet, creating a droning noise that distractes passersby. Loggers then walk blindly into its whirling arms, never to be seen again. No.

E3f If jfiS Jm I I I'!" rl Vivitar, Don't eat that big fish By BILL SCHULTZ Associated Press Writer MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. Don't eat that fish yet! It may be a world-record catch. There are hundreds of record possibilities open to the average angler, according to the International Game Fish Association of Fort Lauderdale, and the National Fresh Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis.

IGFA keeps records on 71 species, having entered the field only a few years ago. Many of its categories are vacant and in others, the existing record is not representative of a large fish for the species. I hit one of those spots with a 21'-pound blue catfish taken from Georgia's Lake Sinclair on a 17-pound line. The existing IGFA record for the line class was only 5 pounds, 7 ounces. The record should be broken soon blue cats grow to more than 100 pounds but for now, it's mine.

The Hall of Fame, which keeps records on more than 100 North American freshwater fish species, expanded an ice fishing division this year, creating many more record possibli-ties. If you're out for a record, the best bet is in the fly fishing division. The Hall of Fame's fly division is "wide open, because it was never something that was pushed," said founder Bob Kutz, The IGFA has more than 125 empty spaces in its fly line record book. Kutz and Jerry Carr, assistant executive director of IGFA, advise record-seeking anglers to: Weigh the freshly caught fish on a certified scale, meaning one that is legal for trade, such as a grocery scale. IGFA requires one impartial witness to the weighing; the Hall of Fame requires two.

Don't cut open any fish you think may be a record. If possible, freeze it. Get a fish biologist to study the fish and make a positive identification. Many species look alike. Get good photographs of the fish.

The Hall of Fame likes pictures in full color to aid in identification. IGFA likes color for the same reason, but would be glad to get a black-and-white, too, to publish in its rulebook or magazine. The picture should show the angler holding the fish in a horizontal position and show all of its fins. Fin structure and size are very important in identifying species. Applicants must be prepared to send a length of their fishing line or fly tippit with the application for a line class record so the line can be tested.

Call the organizations if you have questions. The IGFA can be reached at (305) 467-0161. The Hall of Fame number is (715) $-f sale JJ Your Choice SX-70 IwoP Polaroid Time-Zero SX-70 Film 2-Pack Richer, deeper colors. Sharper pictures. Develops in seconds.
