More importantly, it manages a difficult feat in television the matching of images to spoken poetry in a way that preserves the poet's vision without overpowering it. Klein's roots as a poet lay in his deep devotion to the Jewish tradition and his love of Montreal. His early poetry of the late 1920s and early 30s focused on the urban landscapes of the Jewish neighborhood in Montreal where Klein grew up and city landmarks like St. Joseph's Oratory. The documentary evokes the ro-' manticism of these poems with superb location photography that family living in England during the German siege struggles to maintain a noimal existence.

matches Klein's words in mood and tempo. In 1934 Klein started a law firm and the private world of his poetry began to expand. He wrote speeches for Samuel Bronfman, head of the Canadian Jewish Appeal, travelled to Israel to gather material for his novel, The Second Scroll, and ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in the 1949 general election. Klein's interest in politics is described by two Montreal friends David Lewis and Irving Layton. Throughout his life, Klein pursued a socialist vision that never sacrificed truth for political dogma.

According to Lewis, he wis one of the few Jews who sensed the significance of Hitler's rise to power in Germany in 1934. He was also keenly aware of the anti-Semitic strain running through Charles II and Ihe Restoration. 12:20 Cinema. La Soil du mal. (1957).

In the late 1940s Klein wrote a series of poems about Quebec that showed a sympathetic understanding of the intimacy of French-Canadian culture. Layton's comment that Klein's Jewishness made him a member of the "third solitude" in Canada may help explain why the poet brought special understanding to the problems and tensions of the first two solitudes. Linguistic crisis Col man Klein remembers his father devoting such energy to the unravelling of Joyce's Ulysses that he began to question the meaning of family conversations the pursuit of Joycean wordplay turned into a linguistic crisis. That crisis, combined with a punishing workload, resulted in Klein's breakdown in 1954, TONIGHT (There Is some nudity In this production) until February 16 STUDIO Evenings 20:00 $6.50 Saturday matinees 14:00 $4.75 "GLORIOUSLY FUNNlLso wise, so tunane and so witty JOrtestra Rehearsal' is of apiece with this hriant frector's very best work" -tea Caft.ftaM teai "SEE IT!
