The next question is tougher for McCartney. Would Colorado have been as good if Aunese's death hadn't provided the team with the emotional inspiration? "It's hard to say," McCartney said. "We were good last year. We won eight games, and could have won 10. The biggest change is that this team blended into one.

It put individual pursuits aside. Sal helped us do that more than any other player. He brought this team together. That was his legacy." As the Orange Bowl draws near, there will be many more stories about Aunese. Stories that have been told dozens of times already.

Undoubtely, that will cause another wave of criticism, and more questions asking whether Colorado has gone too far in moiirning its quarterback. Some people will get turned off even more. However, that's not his concern, McCartney says. He isnt asking for opinions on this subject "This thing is very real," McCartney said. "We dont have to explain our feelings about Sal It's not necessary." 105.

"If people would have been around Sal, and heard how he talked to us. If they saw that look in his eye when he talked about how badly he wanted to beat Oklahoma, and how badly he wanted to go to the Orange Bowl, they would have understood. Then those articles wouldn't have been written." Indeed, McCartney is quick to dismiss any notion his team's actions are planned and contrived. At the recent team banquet, McCartney recalled, each of the 14 seniors was asked to make a speech.

Each player got up and talked about his relationship with Aunese. "This is very authentic, genuine," McCartney said. "Nobody knows what's going to happen next We don't have any plans." i. 7.30 pm. Raneas Oy 7H omr Son Dago Hi ml i.oukas 14 (Saaao 1-3.
