Tex rookie Clint Longley. who entered the game midway through the third period for a dazed Roger Staubach. hit Drew Pearson with a desperation 50-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds left Thursday to give Dallas a 24-23 victory over Washington Longley. playing in his first regular season game as a professional, earlier hit Billy Joe DuPree with a 35-yard scoring pass and led Dallas on a 70-yard dnve that ended in a one-yard touchdown run by Walt Garrison that had given the Cowboys a one-point lead late in the third quarter.

But the Redskins rallied early in the final quarter on Duane Thomas' second touchdown of the day against his former teammates and it appeared the Redskins had wrapped up a playoff berth as the final seconds ticked away. Longley. however, faded back to look for a receiver against a prevent defense and spotted Pearson dashing between two defenders deepdownfield son caught the ball at the 15 and raced in untouched for the winning score Washington, with all its timeouts left, still had a chance to work into field goal range for Mark Moseley who kicked three field goals On the first play after the kickoff. however. Billy Kilmer was hit trying to pass, fumbled and Dallas' Harvev Martin recovered.

Moseley had kicked field goals of 45. 34 and 39 yards in the first half to more than offset Efren Herrera's 24-vard field goal and give the Redskins a 9-3 halftime lead Thomas gave Washington a 16-3 lead by taking a nine-vard touchdown pass from Kilmer in the third quarter and moments later the Redskins seemed a certain winner when linebacker Dave Robinson hit Staubach on a scramble and sent the Cowboys quarterback wobbling tothe bench. Longley. four plays later, found DuPree alone in the secondary for a 35-yard touchdown and the next time the Cowboys got the ball the rookie directed them on a near-perfect drive. Longley.

who completed 11 of 20 passes for 203 yards, hit DuPree for 20 yards in that drive, found Pearson for a nine- yardcr and on a crucial third down hit rookie running back Charles Young with a 14-yard pass that set up Garrison's one- yard touchdown run That pui the Cowboys ahead 17-16. Thomas, who led Dallas to a Super Bow! championship three years ago. put the Redskins ahead 23-17 on the third play of the final quarter with a 19-vard sprint around left end. Washington had a chance to aassume a nine-point lead with what would have been Moselev's fourth field goal of thedav. but it was blocked by Ed Jones to keep Dallas'hopes alive.

Tex. (UPI)-When rookie Clint Longley connected with Drew Pearson for a game- winning 50-yard touchdown pass in the final moments Thursday, it would seem likely that Longley. or perhaps Pearson, or maybe even Dallas Cowboy coach Tom Landry might have been the happiest person on the Texas Stadium turf But maybe, just maybe, the happiest person was Roger Staubach. It was Staubach whose exit in the third quarter gave Longley a chance to enter and become an instant hero. i was really said Staubach i've been hit before but I was really out this time But its almost more satisfying to win with Longley because of what Diron (Talbert) What Talbert had said a few weeks ago was that he hoped to encounter a situation just like the Redskins wound up encountering Thursday.

may deny it Staubach said, "but he said it nationwide He wanted me to get hurt and he wanted Longley in the game. Well, it backfired. Now the words are back where they belong." And over where the words belonged, at least according to Staubach. the words came tough i don't have much to say." said Washington coach George Allen, whose Redskias missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot This is the toughest loss we've ever had 1 can remember a tougher loss. Longley did a great job.

that's all you can say." When Staubach left, his head spinning, it was not Talbert who sent him. Washington linebacker Dave Robinson nailed the Dallas quarterback at the end of a nine-vard scramble. "I wasn't trying to put him out. said Robinson never tried to put anybody out When I hit him it felt pretty sad. "Maybe that was the turning point of the game, him going out.

Maybe we should have wanted him to stay in. Longley said the pass route which led to the winning touchdown was Pearson's idea Drew was supposed to run a post but he said they kicked in on him and he thought he could run past the guy." said. Brazosport and Clute by virtue of an impressive 39-28 bi-district victory over 27-4A champion Corpus Christi Carroll in Buccaneer Stadium last Friday night. The Bulldogs.

Last week the McHi defense gave up 291 yards rushing to the explosive Carroll Tigers but retaliated by stampeding through the 24-4A champs for 304 yards. McAllen's running game has been brutally effective this season with tailbacks Andy Rodriguez and Kent Sharp combining with 215 -pound fullback WASHINGTON REDSKINS' HALFBACK DUANE THOMAS RUNS INTO A STACKED DECK OF FORMER DALLAS COWBOYS TEAMMATES Thomas, Who Combined With Calvin Hill To Form What Was Believed To Be A 'Dream Backiield' A Couple Of Years Ago, Was Tackled After Three-Yard Gain By 'Pokes Cornell Green (34) Johnson Rallies Broncos Past Stunned Lions, 31-27 plays set up three third-quarter touchdowns and the Denver Broncos dealt playoff hopes a severe setback Thanksgiving Day with a 31-27 victory Greg Landry, completing 12 straight passes, tried desperately to rally Detroit but could only get one fourth-quarter touchdown. Defensive tackle John Grant sealed the game when he batted down a pass on fourth down at the Detroit 24 with less than two minutes to play. Denver kept its own playoff hopes glimmering by improving its record to 6-5-1, while Detroit dropped back to 6-6 with only its second loss in its last eight games.

Otis Armstrong of the Broncos became the first player to crack 1,000 yards this season by gaining 144 yards in 24 carries to push his season totai to 1.082. Denver trailed 17-10 at halftime, but surprised Detroit by opening the second half with an onside kick which Fran Lynch recovered at midfield. Quarterback Charlie Johnson passed 20-yards to Haven Moses and Armstrong ripped off 31 yards to set up a one-yard run by Jon Key worth which tied the score The Broncos surrendered Errol Mann's ninth consecutive field goal without a miss, a 36- yarder which enabled him to set a new all-time Detroit scoring record with 537 career points, but marched right back for two Mike Gaston and zip-gun quarterback Ronnie Luna to grind out the bulk of the Bulldogs' 2,528 yards rushing. Coach L.Z. Bryant, who has directed the gnd fortunes at the Gulf Coast Brazoswood school since it opened in 1970, has enjoyed meteoric success with three district crowns in five seasons.

Brazoswood's only season loss came in a 15-0 non-conference setback at the hands of East Texas powerhouse Lufkin when Buccaneers were ranked No. 1 in the state AAAA poll by AP. The Buccaneers are led offensively by 185-pound running back Richard Patton, who has rushed for 912 yards on 182 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. Tailback Mark Mardis has rushed for 718 yards on 132 carries. Tom Wiggins quarterbacks the veer offense.

The TCIL semifinal pairing between the two St. Joe schools looks like a veritable tossup. Not only are the Bloodhounds and players both 8-3 on the season but they also share a preference for running the football instead of throwing it. Brownsville St. leading rusher is 165-pound fullback Mike Cortinas w'ho has boomed for 678 yards on 174 carries while 135-pound halfback Paul Middleton has added 593.
