Sunday was "Garfield Tonkin" day at the Billings Rod and Gun club and the largest field of trap shooters in weeks turned out to greet the former club president, home from California after a long convalesence and again the picture of health.

The 60-bird race ended in a four-way tie, Virgil Rothrock, Val Lechner. S. Stump and Charley Campbell breaking 49 skimmers apiece. S. E.

Halveraon copped the 25-target event with 24 breaks and C. O. Campbell came through for a solo victory in a special handicap when he broke 23x25 from the 22-yard stripe. Regular Wednesday night shoots will start this week. Shooting will begin at 8:30 o'clock and clubhouse and grounds will be open to visitors, It was announced.

June 4. VP) An apparent attempt to blow up the Ol-cott Beach hotel failed before dawn Sunday when only one of a dozen sticks of dynamite planted beneath the dining room exploded. The blast broke windows, shattered planks and knocked down a few per sons but none of the 200 guests In the grill room and dance floor was Injured.

The explosives had been placed In an old chute beneath the floor, Sheriff Ira R. Cowdrlck of Niagara county, who took charge of the la vestlgation, found few clues. The hotel Is owned by the Inter national Railway company and has been operated the last three seasons by Hubert Flynn of Newfane. Flynn said he knew of no enemies. Soviet Protests Moscow, June 4.

VP) The soviet government protested Sunday to the Japanese ambassador, Kamekichl Ota, against breaking of the connection between the Chinese Eastern railway and the TJssurlisk railroad In Siberia. An official soviet dispatch said a party of Mimchukuoans led by a Japanese official of the Manchukuo government severed the connection between the roads May 31 at Poghanlchnaya, on the eastern Mn-churlan frontier. Several weeks previously the connection into Siberia nt the western extremity of the C. IS. R.

() Two hun dred and seventy-three men of the emergency conservation corps will go through Missoula Monday for vari ous camps in western Montana. The trainload of young men will arrive from New York Monday morning and most of them will be started Immedl atcly for the woods camps.

Thirteen skeleton companies will be In the group. In addition to those coming to Missoula, 469 are scheduled to ar rive at Gardiner to fill companies in three Yellowstone park camps. Reach Chicago. Chicago, June 4. (IP) Gold star mothers from Washington, Oregon and Montana passed through here Sunday en route to France to visit the graves of their sons in France.

Tornado Sweeps ThroughSouth Dakota Section Wilmot, S. June 4. W) One man was killed, a woman was injured and two score barns and homes were destroyed by a tornado in this section. Damage was estimated at $50,000. Elfred Larson, 25, residing on his mother's farm four miles northeast of Corona was killed when the storm wrecked a barn where he was work, lng.

Near Clinton, Mrs. Ralph Winter was struck by a flying timber and suffered a broken leg. The storm started near Corona and eventually spent Its force across the border In Minnesota. Damage In Minnesota was comparatively light, however. Hail and rain which followed ruined crops in some sections.

Hardin, June 4. (Special.) Added impetus for the erection of the long proposed Custer battlefield museum was given here Sunday when district No. 11 of the American Legion passed a resolution urging Montana's con' gressional delegation to hasten con struction of the memorial to Gen, George A. Custer and his command. Adoption of the motion was followed by a tour of the battlefield by more than 100 members of district posts, accompanied by members of their auxiliaries.

Max Big Man, Crow leader and a proponent of the me morial, acted as their guide. William Fenton of Laurel was elected district commander. Other officers chosen were C. E. Parker of Frombere, adjutant; Monte R.

Smith of Fromberg, vice commander; Ralph Scott of Hardin, sergeant-at-arms. The next annual meeting will be held In the Clarks Fork valley, prob ably at Frombere, headquarters of Clarks Fork valley post. No. 71. The retiring district commander, H.

Woman Is Killed As Man Playfully Points Gun at Her Santa Rosa, June 4. MP) In what police said was an Intended Joke, Mrs. Virginia Lee, 38, San Francisco, was shot and killed by her fiance, Joseph Bacigalupi, 39, as she lay on a bed In women's quarters of a resort near here Sunday. Canning, former county attorney here and prominent In Mon tana legal circles for many years. Thomas Canning was born In Butte June 13, 1903. He made an attempt to enlist in the army during the war but was refused because of his youth and after the war he Joined the avla tlon service. Later he entered the National Law college in Washington and practiced law in the capital until becoming connected with the legal department of the reconstruction finance corporation. He is survived by two brothers and a sister, the latter living here.
