HOLL YWOOD By ED SULLIVAN LISTEN, KIDS Hollywood, June 1. TERRY RAY is 23. She copies from Chicago's Parker High School, where she studied for two years, until family finances forced her to take a job in the accounting department of Marshall Field's. From that huge store, she went to the Grant store. Then she and her mother packed up and came to Hollywood.

Terry (no laziness about her) immediately got a job in Brown's Confectionery, serving sodas and sundaes. One of the patrons she served was Bill Demarest, who had played comedy roles in Broadway musical comedies. "You ought to be in pictures," Demarest told her. "I've heard that line before," said the youngster. "What do you.

want, vanilla or chocolate or maybe raspberry." DEMAREST, however, got her Into pictures. Twenty three year old Terry Ray, at the moment, is playing the feminine lead in "If I Were King," opposite Ronald Colman, and she wants Bill Demarest, wherever he is, to know of her good fortune, because he made all of it possible. She figures that Demarest might not know about it, because her name has been changed to Ellen Drew. IT IS STORIES like this that make Hollywood a nice place. You get a trifle fed up on the swank and pomposity of this town, where the biggies live like feudal kings; where incompetents ars given $2000 a week jobs because they're related to the reigning rajahs.

The deep appeal of Hollywood is in its Cinderella quality, and Terry Ray has been fitted with glass slippers and given a coach and four on the high road to fame. People like to feel that this town offers just such opportunities for a poor' youngster to distinguish herself or himself. Manicurist Arleen Whelan at Twentieth Century Fox aroused the same public rooting. Susan Hayward, daughter of an I. R.

T. subway employe, getting a break at Warners, delights the public fancy.1 Phyllis Kennedy, at RKO, the Fanchon and Marco chorine who suffered a broken back on a Denver stage, but refused to let it affect her backbone, and scored in "Stage Door," offers inspiration to every handicapped kid in the MARJORIE WEAVER, Frances Mercer, Alan Curtis, the Lane kids all are fashioned into the crazy quilt that ambition and opportunity stitch in this town. Not so long ago, Humphrey Bogart and Brian Donlevy couldn't get steady jobs on the New York stage. Hollywood has made them famous and comparatively rich. Martha Raye, the Ritz Brothers and Bob Burns were misfits in a vaudeville system that had come apart at the seams, until Hollywood gave them a chance to draw a winning ticket from the sweepstakes bag.

THE GLAMOR of this town is based on just such success storiei as these. Terry Ray and these other youngsters, lifted from soda clerking to the lead opposite the Ronald Colmans of the industry, are evidence that these things can happen. They are evidence, in a deeper sense, that in a world of isms, this is a land of optimism, of hope. Colman, himself, as you read in a recent column in this space, 1 i A 1 A arrivea in America wim $0(. THE CASE of Terry Ray is timely, because Myrna Loy, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck and other youngsters who "got their breaks years ago, from just such humble beginnings, are too big now to be accepted as the best testimony.

What is happening now in Hollywood is that the replacements are on their way up. Ten years from now, the stars of today will have faded and their places will have been filled by these youngsters of whom we now write as prospects. WHICH BRINGS us, by roundabout stages, to the subject of this piece. June 14 is Flag Day. When I was a kid, we got a deep thrill from this particular day of observance.

Today there is a new feeling in the land. We are told that it is silly to salute the flag, unnecessary. By the same profound reasoning, I suppose, it is juvenile to express your affection for your immediate family. Perhaps I'm a laggard in the parade of progress, but to me there has never been anything so thrilling as the red, white and blue flag of the United States. I've seen it in foreign ports Southampton, Cherbourg, Quebec, Le Havre, Bermuda, Nassau and each time it has stirred me profoundly and enriched the moment.

SHOULD YOU youngsters salute the flag on June 14? Listen, kids, until the day arrives when the Terry Rays and the Susan Haywards and the Tyrone Powers are denied the opportunities that this country offers to them, salute the flag. Beneath it, errors have been made, and venal and mortal sins have been committed, but just between you and me, I have a hunch that you will never see a flag that will equal the hopeful promise of its stripes of red, white and blue.
