By PAUL WALKER Spencer Charters, who plays the judge in "Joy of Living," which continues at the Senate, is, as every reader of this column knows, a'Harrisburger. who is one of the leading character men in Hollywood. Before that he was on the legitimate stage for years. All of the old timers and many others know all about Spencer Charters before he. went on the stage.

For years we've bc en trying to get something on Spencer, direct from Hollywood. Louis E. Alleman, RKO promotion man. turned the trick He wired Rutgers Neilson, publicity man for RKO in New York. Mr.

Neilson wired Hollywood. More on Charters! I give you Rutgers Neilson, whose subject, is (Mr. Neilson's always the press agent): "Joy of Living Began for Spencer Charters Here in Harrisburg." He continues: "While Spencer Charters was born in Duncannon, the joy of living might be said to have really begun for him here in Harrisburg. This statement is not intended as a knock for Duncannon. for Spencer came along to Harrisburg with his parents when he was a little codger and perhaps too young to get excited about the real happiness in the world.

"The local boy who made good and despite a busy career knows the 1'Joy of Living" (yes. Spencer Charters is prominently cast as a magistrate in the Irene Dunne Douglas Fairbanks, starring romantic comedy). Mr. Charters at the last count had appeared in 479 plays, 36 of them on Broadway. He played in silent pictures in their earliest days and right now is one oi the busiest of all Hollywood's busiest performers.

He has appeared in some 75 silent and talking films. "But to get back to Spencer's early days in the He went to school here and his favorite place of recreation (some of the boys make it the bowling alley and some the athletic field) was a local theater. "One of Spencer's first bits of revenue was garnered here by selling born paper to butcher shops. His hobby as a kid was the building and operating of bob sleds, and he still goes up into the snow country around Hollywood to take a whirl at the old sport. "When the traveling troupers hit New York, Spencer got his start in the big time and.

made his first New York appearance with Nelly McHenry in "A Night at the Circus." That was in 1894. "Since he has been featured in such stage successes as "Get Rich Quick Wallingford," "The Tavern."
