He said Monday, however, he had turned down a singing about 20 pounds over his usual fighting weight. "I had this suit cut to to hide it," he grinned. He listened closely to arguments by his lawyers and prosecutors but had no comment. "I have nothing to say about the court case," he said.

"I am trying to cool down some of the militants," he said. "You can't force integration." Reporters kept steering the with statements made in March about making a comeback in the ring. These remarks prompted a reprimand from Elijah Muhammad, head of the Black Muslim sect. The former heavyweight champion was reluctant to talk about the court case and boxing, but was eager to get in a plug about a proposed restaurant chain in which he says he owns half. He said he expects about 50 of the eating places to be in operation around the country by the end of summer.

He said they will be established in poor areas. He declined to say who owned the other half of the franchises. Clay appeared pudgy. In that trial he argued he should be exempt from military duty because he was a black Muslim minister. The U.S. Supreme Court this spring sent the case back to the lower Texas court after the government admitted it tapped Clay's telephone calls. But the government claims it did not use any of the information from the monitored conversations to get the conviction and therefore Clay should not get a new trial. Judge Ingraham will decide on Wednesday these points: Whether Clay and his attorneys should have the extra 30 days to study the wiretapping evidence.

How much of the evidence they will be allowed to see. Whether the wiretapping was a factor in Clay's conviction. If the judge rules the eavesdropping helped to convict the former champion, Clay could get a new trial. Clay, a bit pudgy in a black suit, sat silently through the brief court appearance Monday, staring sourily at the ceiling. "I'm through with boxing forever," he said afterwards, repeating that he would never again enter the ring.

Sonny has been running a continuity youth project and rehabilitation boxing program for boys for the last 18 years, and now the program is threatened by lack of a place to work out. The club has had homes, the Supersonic Car Wash, the Elks Club, the Shrine Auditorium basement, and the Armory.

But as Sonny explained, every place available wants rent, insurance and security. The Billings Boxing Club is strictly voluntary, and they can't afford these costs, Sonny added. U.S. Dist. Judge Joe Ingra-ham postponed until Wednesday his decision on a request by Clay's attorneys for a 30-day extension of his hearing so they can study government wiretapping evidence they have never seen. Liske played the last" three years with Calgary after going to Toronto in 1965 after a trial with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL, then coached by Lou Saban, the present Denver coach and general manager. Liske was voted the Canadian league's outstanding player in 1967. His passing record in four seasons there was 843 completions of 1,490 passes for 12,836 yards and 95 touchdowns. His completion average is 56.6 per cent. "We couldn't be more happy that Pete has signed with the Broncos," Saban said.

"He is not only an outstanding player but he is a real class individual." Liske will challenge veteran Steve Tensi and Marlin Briscoe, a rookie last year, for the starting quarterback job. "We like nothing better than real honest competition," Saban said.
