Paradoxically, John Barrymore, one of the victim's "The Royal Family's" satire, is the hair pullingest, shoutingest, ravingest maniac of them all in "20th Century." He's aptly dubbed an ecomaniac by those who attempt to retain their sanity while dealing with him as Oscar Jaffe, producer extraordinary. hour of the craziest acting ever. film the needed box office appeal But to our way of thinking there is much to be said for Mr.

Anyway here we are in New York. Jimmie and Ginger hit the big money first. Charley and Janet find the going a little rough. And then love comes. Jimmy loves Janet.

Janet loves Charley. Charley loves Ginger. Ginger loves herself but she COULD be tamed. Cupids bowstrings and the foursome's heartstrings are all tangled. My! My! "Then Ginger finds a rich boy friend Kenneth Thompson.

"Goodbye, Charlie, I must leave you." Whereupon Janet becomes the focal point for the affections of Jimmy and Charley. Romance is warming up! About the time Janet nurses Charley through a serious illness, Ginger turns up to re claim the boy friend. Ginger has the looks (Hi, Janet) but has the sweetness. Three guesses who wins? Right the first time? This isn't our kind of a picture BUT it is the kind the Farrell Gay nor fans will adore You should have heard the oh's and ah's last night It's a good F. G.

film so let's let it go at that! MAJESTIC (By CNF): The movies literally tickle their own ribs for an hour and a half of hilarity in "20th Century," which can be described only as one of the "screwiest" pictures we've ever seen. The movies, the stage and all the followers of both are subjected to the most ironical of fun poking in Carole Lombard, as Lily Garland, is equally tempestous as Jaffe's protege. Both are excellent, shrieking and hating each other in one breath, wheedling and coaxing in another, and in the next both blowing up in a temperamental conflagration that would do justice to a lioness defending her cubs. Jaffe picks up Lily from behind a store counter and makes her the stage's greatest. After three years the combination is unbearable and she goes off to Hollywood, becoming greater than ever, while Jaffe goes broke.

Then they meet, en route from Chicago to New York, on the Twentieth Century Limited. Her hate is still afire. He needs her to become rehabilitated and he gets her to sign a contract after a half The comedy throughout the picture is excellent and Walter Con nelly and Roscoe Karns, usually the comedians, seem sane by com parison with the principals. LOEWS (By Al Clark) He done her wrong is the essence of Loew's current screen offering, "Sadie McKee," but pretty Joan Crawford proves her, point that she can take it, baby, i i "SADIE "Sadie" "Michael" "Brennan" "Tommy" "Dolly" "Opal" "Riccori" "Phelps" "Stooge" "Landlady" "Entertainers" "Entertainers" McKEE" CAST Joan Crawford Franchot Tone Edward Arnold Gene Raymond Esther Ralston Jean Dixon Aklm Tamiroff Leo Carroll Earl Oxford Zelda Sears Candy and Coco Gene Austin "TWENTIETH "Oscar Jaffe" "Lily Garland "Webb" "O'Malley" "Jacobs" "Clark" "Sadie" "George Smith" "Lockwood" "Conductors" "Schultz" "McGonigle" "Sheriff" "Porter" "First Beard" "Second Beard" "Flannigan" CENTURY" CAST John Barrymore Carole Lombard Walter Connolly Roscoe Karns Charles Levlson Etienne Girardot Dale Fuller Ralph Forbes Clifford Thompson James P. And it's a three star picture on the screen, "Sadie McKee," as portrayed by Joan Crawford in this film, is a return of the "Sadie Thompson" of Jeanne Eagle's day but the Holly wood boys dressed her up, set her down amidst settings that click, and put a new morale in place of the old. It is an excellent Crawford pic ture, supplemented by a capable portrayal in the competent hands of Franchot Tone and Gene Raymond. Sadie is the pretty lass who went across the railroad tracks to the big house on the hill. Tommy, the love angel, wooes and the two do a breakaway to New York. He promises to wed but forgets for the sake of a blonde job neatly enameled and clothed in wolves clothing.

Tommy is a stage stooge doing a bit from a box. Sadie, still loving, marries millions in a ten cent romance with a millionaire. The result is scandal. Strange interludes follow strange interludes. Still love beats on in Sadie's heart.

Tommy lies dying and the fade out is the answer to unrequited love finding itself on a death bed. Innuendos as used by Zelda Sears do what words would fail. It's a bit of drama shaken in a cocktail shaker of Life, with a dash of comedy that produces a drink to satisfy the thirst. The short subjects are splendid and rib ticklers. vivi viua oy w.
