MACKINAC SALES FORD COMET 1 Mile West of the Bridge in St. 460 After 6 p.m. call Roy 632-3726 Varnurn Lauds Legislature For Luce Land Leasing The Michigan legislature was commended today by State Charles Varnum CR-Manistique) for putting their stamp of approval on his legislation which leases 16 acres of land in the Upper Peninsula to Luce County for recreational purposes. Varnum has led the fight to transfer the land from the Dewberry State Hospital to Luce County "for will be baseball diamonds and future recreational developments.

"The Michigan Senate tacked on four amendments to the original proposal which only tended to strengthen the transfer," Varnum said. "Those interested citizens in Luce County can be commended for their constructive desire to insure badly needed recreational facilities. Under the measure both the area residents and the residents of the Newberry State Hospital will be able to use the facilities." The legislation only needs the Governor's signature to become law which should be forthcoming in the near future. The land will be leased by Luce County at 10 year intervals at the price of Si-00 per year. As written into the proposed law the lease shall be renewable under mutual agreement until the termination of recreational use or until the state shall require the land for state use.

According to the Upper Peninsula legislator "I have been in contact with officials of all affected parties and the proposed law is to their liking. This I feel can be cited as a positive step forward for the land use policies for the Upper Peninula and specifically for Luce County." In conclusion Varnum pointed out that "transfer of land on such a low rental basis is very favorable. Since this amount of land would cost five to six thousand dollars on the open market to obtain it would be almost impossible for land to be acquired by the county for such recreational purposes."
