weeks later and was, assigned to the 513rd parachute infantry. He was one year overseas. and served in the campaigns of Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He has been awarded the purple heart, ETO ribbon with three battle stars, combat infantry badge and presidential unit citation. SHAFER GETS DISCHARGE HOME WITH HONORS According to official announcement from the U.S.

naval training center in Bainbridge, George G. Shafer, EM whose home address is 72 Pine street, Lebanon, has received his honorable. discharge, Pioneer Taken by Death Charles Joseph Howe, 81, a resident of the Brownsville section for the past 58 years, died at his home on Nov. 28. He was born in Massachusetts, Jan.

5, 1865, coming to Albany at the age of 21 and a year later moving to Brownsville where he worked. in the woolen mills and later was in the merchantile business there for 24 years. He served Brownsville 12 years as city recorder, retiring from that office a year ago. He was a member of the Baptist church and was prominent in fraternal organizations and civic affairs. Services will be held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Browns-. ville Baptist church with Rev. Moffett officiating. Burial will be- in the Masonic cemetery, the Howe-Huston chapel in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Howe is survived by his Bessie Allen Howe, son Ly-1 man J. of The Dalles, daughter Mrs. Emma Sparks of Pilot Rock, three grandchildren, one, greatgrandchild, and various nieces and nephews, one of the latter -being Harry Howe of L'ebanon. Refrigeration Service Opening in Lebanon One of the latest additions to the list of local business establishments is Lebanon Refrigeration and Appliance, formal opening of which is announced this week by Lu Verne.

Scott, a former Lebanon man. The new establishment, located at 535 Main steret, will for, the time being feature domestic and service, but will add a full line of appliances when they are available in greater quantities, Scott said. The proprietor plans to erect a store building when materials are available. Since leaving here in 1938, Scott has been in eastern Oregon and northern Minnesota, devoting all his time to electriel. and refrigreation work.

He received the good conduct badge, silver star and unit citation. Mrs. W. H.
