JUNE 22, 1933 15 THURSDAY EVENING TTT)r7? 8STA A faith bv wfi i Nfimu a fHE OLD TWER" 1 HAKRISBURG TELEGRAPH fVf TTTN CANZONERI CLAIMS HE WILL WIN FIGHT; ROSS HAS OPINION Chicago, June 22. (JP) Tony Canzoneri, owner of the worid lightweight championship, and Barney Ross, who will try to take it away from him Friday night in the Chicago Stadium, are ready for the ten round battle even to the point of predicting how and when it will end. Canzoneri. who has managed to hang on to the crown against Jack (Kid) Berg, Billy Petrolic and Kid Chocolate, figures that the fight wil! go about three rounds and that he will still be champion. CHAMPION IS AWARDED PRIZE In the presence of members of his family, local marble shooters p.nc.

a number of picnickers at Reservoir Park, John Honafous, city marble champion, was yesterday afternoon presented with a hand tome wrist watch on behalf of the Harrisburg Telegraph, sponsors for the maibie tournaments in Harris turg and vicinity for eleven years. The presentation was made by Wellington G. Jones, sports editor. The champion, wearing a broad smile, responded thanks. He said part: "Many thanks to the Harrisburg Telegraph that has been doing a wonderful thing for the boys and girls w.th their marble tournaments eacn year.

I am Tlad I won, and want my friends to understand that I will do my very best at Ocean City. I have had a good time in these contests and know all the marble shooters think as I do. I am proud to win this prize. Boys and girls who do not get into the marble game are missing a big thing." Late tomorrow the city champion his escort will leave for the seashore. They will be busy all next v.eek.

Honafous will not do any more training until he reaches Ocean City. During his absence the matches wil. be in charge of Charles vter. Junior Demy, Red Hendricks ar.d John Wolfe. Charles Ly ttr will name other assistants.

The will be in the junior series and for boys who were late comers la the series and did not have a c.iance to play the required number of games. OLD MASTER unu vvmunvn New York, June 22, (JP). Tommy Loughran, the old master of ring strategy, is back in the fistic limelight again. He no longer is regarded as a contender for championships of any kind, but after being regarded as "all through" a half dozen times since he was knocked out by Jack Sharkey four years ago, he has returned to the "big time" and big crowds with a ten round decision over his old rival, Steve Hamas. Carrying on a quiet come back campaign, Tommy staged perhaps the greatest comeback of them all 'ore 10.000 excited fans at the Yankee Stadium last night.

For eight rounds he barely staved off the rushes of the fiery Wallington, bit, of Dunishment. He gave Hamas a lesson in the use of the straight arm such as Steve never received on the Penn State football field, poking his left into Hamas' face with nimnst monotonous regularity. but that wasn't quite enough. Then in the ninth, bleeding irom cuts over both eyes and apparently not far from a knockout, Loughran suddenly switched from boxing to fighting. He rocked Hamas' head back with hard rights and lefts, slugged and swatted on even terms and won the last two rounds and a close decision.

The triumph over Hamas, who knocked him out less than two vecrr ago, while it only evened the series at two victories, provided othincr nf climax for Louch nn't latest, hirt for nlace nmone A nB ra lo it were vicLoncs uvci inff i.evinsKV. waiter uodd anu sacioro uasianaea. ijounuran nA fin STEELT0N FIREMEN'S KITTEN BALL LEAGUE Wert Side P. Notable among them was the switch which sent Lefty O'Doul to the New York Giants and Sam Leslie to the Brooklyn Dodgers, but the Boston Philadelphia deal, involving Pinkey Whitney, Hal Lee, Wes Schulraerich and Fritz Knothe also seems to have been beneficial to both teams. O'Doul, who wasn't hitting at all with the Dodgers, again made himself an important figure with the bat yesterday when, for the second time since the June 15 trade, he paced the New Yorkers to a victory that helped them hold the lead in the elder circuit. Lefty made two hits as the Giants downed the Chicago Cubs 3 1 in a brilliant mound duel between Fred Fitzsim mons and Pat Malone. and one was a homerun that put New York ahead to stav. Leslie's clouting already has won a couple of games for the Dodgers but he? couldn't do much yesterday as the St.

Louis Cardinals, after giving away five runs in the first inning, came back to win 7 5. Whitnev. the leading figure in the trade between the Braves and the Phillies, got a new job at sec' ond base yesterday when the vet eran Rabbit Maranville, was bench' ed and Dick Gyselman was put in at third. He not only nnea tne bill afield, but he walloped three hits and batted in five runs as the Braves took both ends of a double header from the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6 5 and 5 3. The Phils' new acquisitions, Schulmerich and Knothe, batted in six of the ten counters Philadelphia scored in the sixth and seventh innings to beat Cincinnati, 10 8.

American League In the American League, Washington's so far unsuccessful pursuit of the New York Yankees again furnished the day's high spots as both teams won and remained a game and a half apart. The Senators had little trouble downing the Chicago White Sox, 9 0, as they uncorded an eignteen hit assault, including four blows by Manager Joe Cronin, while Earl Whitehill kept nine hits well scattered. The Yanks, however, had to go thirteen innings to beat the last place St. Louis Browns, 5 3 despite Lou Gehrig's seventeenth homerun of the season and Tony Lazzeri's twelfth. The Cleveland Indians continued their winning streak with more flashy pitching as Wes Ferrell lim ited the Philadelphia Athletics to i.w aaiewca wmie 1110 maica puuijucu ueorge iarnsnaw lor an triumph.

The Boston Red Sox split a dou bleheader, the Sox winning the opening slugfest, 10 9 with the aid of a five run rally in the sixth and the Tigers coming back to get a 5 3 victory behind Fred Marberry's good Hinging. HOUSE OF DAVID WINS NIGHT GAME OVER HARRISBURG Led by Frank Emmer, veteran in fielder, who played with Harrisburg part of the 1932 season, the House of Davd team last evening defeat Harrisburg. 5 to 2, at Island Park. The game was played under the stars' portable lighting system. Approximately 1500 peo pJe witnessed the contest.

Eob Jacobs, former hurler for the DeWfu Clinton High School team of New York City, pitched eight in nings for the Senators and while he was found for five runs, showed much promise. He was extremely wad, walkine eieht batters but looks food enough' to be farmed out for future cevelopment. The contest was featured by fine plays by LaFleur and Hollands, the lirst named a former Wilkes Barre player and the latter a one time WiUiamsport athlete. McCrone's Mites From Tennis Fans Communications from tennis en thusiasts are rolling in, and from indications there are many ioikw ers of the net game in Harrisburg back of our movement for more courts. We understand several petitions are being circulated in an effort to call attention of city fathers to the woeful scarcity of playing space. We reproduce a letter from one fan wnose name is wun held upon request.

It follows: Dear Sir: I hope you keep up your fight for more and better tennis courts in the city. I have been a resident of Harrisburg practically all of my life and just love to play tennis. Many times I have gone to play and had to wait quite a long time to get a court. I played at Reservoir a little while ago, and the courts were terrible. One court has a lot of tough grass on it that makes it look like a grass court that is not very well kept I hope you will keep up the good work and some day if we don't get more courts, they may at least take care of the ones we have.

Typical Comments The above comments are typical of how city tennis fans feel about the situation. one argument against building any more courts this season is the lack of money, and without it is a good one, but there is no excuse for leaving what few courts we have deteriorate until they are unfit lor playing. Outfielder Carr Smith, who was originally slated for a berth with Harrisburr, Is bow with Williamsport. A deal which would have sent Pitcher June Green to Richmond In exchange for Smith failed and the Colts turned him over to Jersey City in the International circuit. Several days later he was shifted to Williamsport.

Bender vs. Shawkey When the House of David club. which opposed Harrisburg last night, meets the Scranton Miners Wednesday at Scranton. two vet eran hurlcrs will be on the mound Chief Bender, former Athletic star, will start for the bearded stars, and Manager Bob Shawkey, former Yankee ace. will be on the mound for the Miners.

Outfielder Lou Finney, who was with Harrisburg and York several seasons ago and later made the grade with the Philadelphia Athletics, has been sent to the Montreal elub of the International League. Finney is pleased with the arrangement in that he may be recalled on a twenty four hour notice and still has a chance to play regularly. Kitten Bail Popular A few words for kitten ball are not out of place at this time. Kitten ball Is not a new game, It is plaved under almost the same rules as baseball and Is perhaps better known as "indoor" baseball. Because nearly everybody can play it without laying out a large amount of capital for equipment, and also due to the fact that only a small pace is needed, it la the most popular summer sport today.

BUDDY LAKE WINS OVER BINGHAMTON Senators Win Three Out of Four Games From Trips Bunching opportunities in the sixth inning yesterday Eddie Onslow's Harrisburg Senators aided by oirtighi pitching by Buddy Lake defeated Bill Myers' Binghamton Triplets, 2 to 1 at Island Park. Yesterday's "i gave the Senators three out of four games with the New York State club. Lak i Pitches Well Except for the first and ninth in nings Lake was 'never in trouble. The Trips scored one in the first and threatened in the ninth slanzu but a running catch by Mer ville followed by a quick throw home ended the rally. Bob Shipley opened the Binghamton first inning by coaxing a walk.

Leishman and McQuinn flied out, cut Solly Mishkin poked a long triple to right field to score Shipley. Cy Morgan started Senator hostilities in the sixth inning by beat out a hit to short stop. He went cut trying to steal second base when Baker forgot to bunt on a sacrifice pfay. Baker strolled and pulled up at third on Merville's double which hit the right field fence. Mishkin returned the ball to Shipley who tiirew the pellet into the Senator dugout in a vain attempt to get Baker atfchird base.

Both runners scored. Sign Les Sweetland Pitcher Les Sweetland, formerly of the Philadelphia National League ciub, signed a contract yesterday ana june ureen, veteran knuckle ball ace, was sent to Norfolk in the Piedmont League. It was announc ed that Walter Masters, former university of Pennsylvania hurler sent here by Albany, has refused to report. He will probably be placed oil tne suspended list. Toda.

The Teuton Shikat, desired on a local card for the past half year will eratifv the wishes of thousands here wnen ne ciimos tnrougn tne ropes to meet the aggressive and unscrou pulous Bull Komar, the barrel chested giant in the windup of the second outdoor show on Island Park Field next Wednesday night, June 28. Seeks New Title Following an enforced lay off last year after he broke his left arm in an automobile accident, Shikat has bided his time and today stands on the threshold of a new title. For the blond haired Hercules has met and defeated the best grappling land has had to offer. These victories include conquests over Ernie Dusek, George Zaharias, Jim McMillan, Dick Daviscourt, and a host of others. Since his return to the canvas last season he has not lost a single match.

The closest he came to defeat, if you want to call it that, was once when he drew with Ernie Dusek in Washington when the curfew law stopped the bout in almost two hours. Battles Friday Night Richard knew defeat but once before he was hurt last year and that came when Gus Sonnenberg pinned his shoulders. However, Shikat obliterated the stigma of that defeat by conquering Gus in such a manner later that there was no question as to which wrestler was superior. Shikat must defeat Everett Marshall, one of the newer stars, at Philadelphia Friday night, if he is to realize his dream of again meeting Jimmy Londos next. He must also overcome the stumbling block that Komar will afford in this city.

One little sup, you know, and Komar can ruin every chance Shi "kat has of meeting the champion, Jimmy Londos. Such stands the circumstances of a whirlwind windup. The action will have to be fast and furious to be better than the preliminary action, alright. More Speed Boys Bert Bertolini announces that Floyd Marshall will engage the speedy Joe Nawrocki in the main thirty minute match, and it should be a furious ngnt from start to finish. A new comer of high caliber comes to the Island in the form of Harry Pierce, a recognized first division man.

He will come to grips with the burly and capable Sun Jennings, the former Haskell Institute star. Alwavs seeminelv deserving of a better srot the fast and shifty Babe Caddock, a popular figure here, will meet the star, Jim Atlas, who went over with a bang in a recent snow. Activities start at 8.30 o'clock as usual and ladies are admitted free with male escorts. JUNIOR INDOOR BASEBALL GAMES The Forster Street Branch Y. M.
