Harrisburg Light and Power Co. THE HOIK 6r MODERN P0ITEB TUESDAY EVENING HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH NOVEMBER 8, 1927 'LOVES OF CARMEN' AT COLONIAL WITH DOLORES DEL RIO mj gU I kJ Mna tOLOWMUO or CARMEN' mDONMVAMDO: win i ah KK Armaxm "The Loves of Carmen" playing this week at the Colonial Is very different in intrpretation from the operatic form of the same story. The gitano atmosphere is well carried off, on the whole, but the final tragic scene falls a little short. Victor McLaglen, playing the part of "Escamillo," toreador, and toast of all Spain, does the best acting in the picture. He hadn't the scope that "What Price Glory" gave him, but he made a splendid bull fighter.

His gestures, and his free use of a rich Spanish inventive were a Joy to behold. Dolores Del Rio, "Carmen" is at her best as the Gitano. Some of her acting savors of over directing, rather than the free spirit of the tempestous gipsy. She does better work, on the whole, than she did in "Resurrection." Dolores Del Rio is added charm of a lovely smile and plenty of vivacity. Don Alvarado playing the fart of the unfortunate "Jose" makes a dashing officer, and a pathetic gipsy.

He struggles with a part that is too much lor him. The picture carries with it scenes of the gay life of old Seville, mom ments that are intense, flashes of swift moving drama, yet even the central figure does not seem sufficient to mold into a complete whole. 1 The Mack Sepnett comedy, with Madeline Hurlock, and Billy Bevan, is really funny. There is enough slapstick, even pie throwing, and the usual complicated moments are amusingly' arranged. "In a Cottage Garden" is a Keljey Color 'picture.

It deals with various flowers, and the coloring is fine. No doubt there is much still to be done in the field of colored motion pictures, but features like this repre sent good solid work, and progress. The program, includes also a Pathe News Reel. r. Jeter Parke This is the first mystery drama by the Morgan Wallace Players. If you like your melodrama rnel low, your mystery deep and your comedy what it ought to be better stop around at the Majestic this week and see "The Ghost Train." It has considerable thrills aboard, keeps you guessing and relieves the tension with a laugh. William Melville does his best work in this as the station master who sets the stage for the "ghost train' Kathryn Sheldon is, inimit able as the spinster lady with the parrot named Joe who is christened Clara when he drops an egg. Inci dentally she has a nice easy part after the middle of the second act; drinks the Englishman's brandy and sleeps on a table until the mystery is solved, etc.

It all happens in a lonely railroad station at Clear Vale Junction on a branch line near Rockland. Maine. There arrive the newlyweda, the too longly weds (who start a second honevmoon after it's all over), the maiden lady, who had 'em when she was young and the funny look llll'IIHIIi jjWwatl IWMiyW mm is theme that It portrays. The scene laid on the great Sahara desert, where three brothers, loyal and faithful until the fight and sacrifice themselves for each other. In the French Foreign Legion, with derelicts and deserters, they fight for For the honor of the other, each man himself freely to the "exile of the self condemned," submitting to the Inhuman and treacherous Lejaune, and like real men standing by that beast and the French flag to which they were pledged when mutiny in the far off desert garrison threatens.

"Beau Geste," is a mighty force that plays to the emotions and is filled with pathos. It is tragedy, love, mystery, brutality, hatred and military all in one. It gives glimpse into the character of the true man In the face of adversity and death and compares three such men with human wreckage lives that: have been broken by love, sin and dis honor, men who go to their Heath In order that they might forget and be forgotten. d. w.

The plot starts to circulate after the: bid station master tells 1 the story of the wreck in v.hich six died, his predecessor vho dropped dead throwing the switch, the mad en gineer, the waving red lantern and all that. There are shrieks and screams, this and that, strange noises, bumps on the door and then the train comes. Here's where the ladies yelll We mean yelL Whereupon Mr. and Mrs.

Audi ence and all the little audiences sit on the edges of their seats and chew their programs, finger nails, and what have you to revive an ancient gag; It's great ladies and gentlemen. Then there are smugglers who wear full dress suits, one of whom wears a full beard to hide his villainous, unshaven countenance and It all ends when the detective, not the one on the case, throws the switch, sidetracks the train and tells the bad boys to "pick French for "stick 'em up." One thing we didn't like about this play. Our little Sylva Farnese is in with the smugglers. She helps stage the little drama in the railway station. She actually points a gun at Charley, the brand new husband, and tells him shell send him to Heaven or else before he and Mrs.

Charley reach that nice hotel room in Rockland. She's a bad, bad little girl and has a record in Scotland Yard and all that. But the little lady steps right into the part and is a bard boiled little oJokens. We're go Ing to like her much better next week in "The Little Spitfire," where, she is a chorus girl with a Cinderella complex. Russel Snoad bad a little more to do in this play and did it well.

But first honors go to William Melville, Kathryn Sheldon and Sylva, "the little snowbird." Leonard Lord is the dumb looking Londoner who turns out to be the works. VI L. U. K. William Faversham, Alfred Sutton, Ralph Sumpter, and Nell Sutton, Edith Faversham.

The play is really most clever, and amusing, and the actors know their parts well. William Fav ersnam and Edith Faversham (who I take to be Mrs. William Faver sham) and who is most charming, are especially good. I should soy that Mr. Faversham is charmina and most I like him! Dr.

Rockwell, in "Quack, Quack; Quack," is full of witty unsmiling humor. He is most, clever and amusing, and got a lot of laughs and applause from the audience. He kept them in gales of laughter, and the beauty of the thing was that he himself didn't even smile, One of his accessories (in crime) was a banana stump I hope that I have the correct name for it. He used this to illustrate his address on the human back bone. Dr.

Rockwell nlaved a little instrument and made a big rut witn bis audience. The last act with Madeiyn and Hoyt Meredith is charming." Miss Meredith I imagine that she is Miss Meredith as she and Mr. Meredith look so much alike has a lot of personality and there is a great resemblance between her and Eleanor Boardman. She Mr. Meredith are both lovely dancers.

Their act is divided into three sets, the first being a' scene representing the South Sea Isles; the second, an old fashioned gavotte and the third, which is called "Just Themselves." At the request of Dr. Rockwell, who is sitting up In one of the boxes and who amuses the folks some more with, his side remarks, the Merediths do another dance for the audience and please them by saying a few words. The screen "One Woman to Another, features Florence Vidor. She is her own lovely self. Miss Vidor is ably supported by Tneoaore Von Elte Shirley Dorman and Hedda HoDner.

The story is modern most emphatically so and oeais with a vamp a blonde in this case. She is nlayed bv Miss Dor man, who trys to steal away Miss Vidor's fiance, Theodore Von Eltz, a most handsome young man, by the way. There are a lot of humorous parts in the picture, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Miss Vidor wears some perfectly lovely gbwns, which I hear she designed herself. Among these, there is a negligee which takes no mean part in the picture.

tMerrill" Hobart Boetoortfc "Mrs. Merrill Evelyn Hali "Millicent Rogera" Taylor "Judge" Mack Swain Don't' fail to see "My Best Girl." Mary Pickford here at Loew's Regent this week is her adorable self in one of her Incomparable film presentations of the lovable young girl. Naive and earnest, her acting is delightfully natural in scenes of sadness and those of and tensely dramatical at times. She is Maggie Johnson, the pretty salesgirl' in the flve and ten cent store, and she falls In love with Joe Merrill, son of the wealthy owner of the store, thinking all the while that he is just a poor boy. But the Fates are bound to be kind to Maggie, for how could they be otherwise, and through weal and woe of the wealthy father's opposi tion, one feels that it just must come out all right.

An unusual scene is that of the dinner at Merrill's house to which Mary is taken by Joe on the pretext that the "boss" likes to have his clerks know just how he lives. Mary Pickford's sunny scenes fairly radiate her tears are so convincing that they cause almost an approach of the lump in one's throat. Long may she live! Charles Rogers, who plays' the part of Joe, is the one who had the leading male role in "Wings." He used to be the trombone player in his college but after his first screen test about two years ago he has risen rapidly. There is a sincerity and boyish appeal in his playing. No wonder Maggie fell in love with him.

Hobart Bosworth, as Merrill and five and ten king, gives one of his best characterizations as the boy's father, and Lucien Littlefteld as the father of Maggie, is pathetic, yet absurdly funny as the hen pecked husband. Sunshine as the whining mother whose main pleasure Is to attend Carmelita Ge raghty as Maggie's sister; Evelyn Hall as Joe Merrill's fiancee, and John Junior as the cheap sport, are the other actors in this well balanced picture. The film affords a number of unusually good situations which add much to its charm. This reviewer's advice is "don't miss it." Badger and Mueseler, two boys and a piano, have a fair skit, comprising several medleys.
