1 The daily record Winona Funerals Mrs. Elizabeth Milnarsek Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth F. Milnarsek, 88, Paul Watkins Memorial Nursing Home, who died there Friday, were held this afternoon at Martin Funeral Chapel, The Rev. A.

U. Deye, St. Martin's Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Raymond Dingfelder, Steven Przytarski, Richard Luehman, Leonard Dienger, James Glende and Gerald Semling.

State Jaycees honor ten as outstanding MANKATO, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Jaycees honored their selections for the 10 Outstanding Young Men of the year Saturday night during ceremonies in Mankato. The men were honored for their service to their communities during 1971. Named were: Richard Schaak, 32, St. Paul, the president of Schaak Electronics who was cited for his advances in the business world; Ronald L.

Sandness, 26, a handicapped person who was honored for his work with handicapped children in the Moorhead area; Gerald R. Ringhofer, 32, the executive editor of the Owatonna Peoples Press for his work in journalism; and David E. Knefelkamp, Stillwater, for his work with youth in drug education. Others honored were: Patrick D. O'Rourke, 35, Wells, for his work in furthering the farm industry; Allan C.

Buchholz, 31, Roseville, for his efforts in conservation; Ralph G. Foudray, Shakopee, for his work in the community and especially efforts in drawing up a new city constitution. Also, State Sen. George R. Conzemius, 35, Cannon Falls, for his work in education, farming, business and politics; Robert M.

Benedict, 21, Bloomington, for his efforts in forming the Minnesota Team Corps; and Fredrick E. Saccoman, 32, Albert Lea, for his work with Junior Achievement. Turtle that told coming of spring to predict no more FULTON, Mo. (AP) -In the depths of winter, Callaway County residents have learned their most faithful harbinger of spring is dead. For 34 years, a surer sign than a robin on the wing was the appearance from hibernation of a turtle owned by Mr.

and Mrs. Don B. McVey. It was found dead Thursday. Mrs.

McVey got the turtle in 1937 when it was the size of a half-dollar. She called it Oswald 30 years, until it started laying eggs, then the name be came Oswaldine. Preliminary work on removal and altering the remaining portion of the old highway bridge over the Mississippi River here was started. Fifty years ago 1922 Arthur Green, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs.

Thomas Green, 167 Center is the latest recruit to the ranks of amateur radio operators. News dispatches and a concert from Pittsburgh were heard last evening. John Stackowitz was the only Winona bowler to find a place among the first 10 standings in the doubles or singles at the International Bowling Association tournament in St. Paul. Seventy-five years ago 1897 A new schoolhouse is to be erected at Arnold's Valley, Wis, A petition is being circulated at Arcadia requesting the railroad company running through there to erect a new depot.

Capt. Davidson and Buckick of the Volunteers have gone to Minneapolis to attend a council of their organization. According, to Drazkowski, police Charles captain Fischer, 418 E. 4th told police that sometime last week the battery from his 1964 model sedan was taken and also a 5- ton jack which was under the rear of his boat. Both the car and boat were parked at the rear of his home.

Value of the battery and jack is set at $100. Richard A. Kolter, 1128 W. Mark. reported that sometime between 9:30 p.m.

Saturday and 7:30 a.m. someone shot a BB "through the left window of his van while it was parked in front of his house. Estimated value is $50. Anderson signs proclamation for state caucus day ST. PAUL, Minn.

(AP)-A proclamation designating Tuesday as political caucus day in Minnesota was signed by Gov. Wendell Anderson, who will turn out to be "the man who wasn't there." Anderson will be attending the Midwinter Governor's Conference in Washington, D.C. when Democrats and Republicans hold their grassroots meetings. Meanwhile, backers of Sen. George McGovern, have announced formation of 55 McGovern-for-president clubs at Minnesota colleges and high schools.

His supporters claim endorsements by 44 student body presidents and college editors in the state. Woman recovers cost of wig lost to flaming dessert DETROIT (AP) A columnist, victimized by a threealarm strawberry-banana flambe five years ago, recouped the cost of her wig and gown Friday, with enough left to pay for a tamer dessert. A Wayne County Circuit Court jury awarded Eleanor Lambert Berkson $10,000 in damages for the disastrous dinner party she and nine others attended at the Pontchartrain Hotel on April 30, 1967. Witnesses said the brandy used on the flambe-consisting of strawberries, ice cream and bananas- erupted, spraying Miss Lambert and others with flaming fruit. Aside from a $1,389 medical bill, she also presented the court with bills for $800 for custom hair pieces and $1,650 for an exclusive, high-couturier gown and accessories.

Initially, she had asked for $100,000. GALESVILLE, Wis. Bert Olson, 70, Galesville, died Saturday at Grand View Nursing Home, Blair, after a long illness. The son of Mr. and Mrs.

Marcus Olson, he was born at Galesville, April 26, 1901. He never married. Survivors are: two brothers, Clarence and Lester, Galesville, and three sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Gladys) Smith and Mrs. Harvey (Hazel) Olson, Ettrick, and Mrs.

George (Aslaug) Dickenson, Tucson, Ariz. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville, the Rev. M. C.

Parkhurst officiating, with burial in Pine Cliff Cemetery. Friends may call at Smith Mortuary, Galesville, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday at the church from 12:30 Lavere Cody MONDOVI, Wis. Lavere Cody, 78, Mondovi, died Sunday at Buffalo Memorial Hospital, here. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday at Our Savior's United Methodist Church. Kjentvet and Son Funeral home is completing arrangements. Walter Mengelt MONDOVI, Wis. Walter Mengelt, 65, Mondovi, died Saturday afternoon at Buffalo Memorial Hospital here. He was born a March 1, 1906 in Alma, Wis.

to Herman and Ella Landis Mengelt. He spent the majority of his life in Mondovi where he was employed by the city. He was married to Mildred Urness, who died in October, 1970. He was a member of Thompson Valley Lutheran Church. Survivors are two daughters: Mrs.

Sanford (Agnes) Crandall, Mondovi; Mrs. Wilbur (Shirley) Bergner, Durand, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kjentvet and Son Funeral Home, the Rev. William Schumacher, Central Lutheran Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Thompson Valley Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today and Tuesday until time of services. Frank Schultz MINNEISKA, Minn. Frank Schultz, 87, lifelong Minneiska farmer, died at 11:45 p.m.

Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Wabasha, where he was taken after suffering a stroke Saturday morning. Born Aug. 19, 1884, in Minneiska to Albert and Albertine Schultz, he married Ella Johnson at Wabasha, on Dec. 14, 1904.

The couple farmed in Minneiska Township where he served on the town board for many years. After his wife died on Nov. 11, 1943, he lived with a daughter near Minneiska for five years before entering Hillcrest Nursing Home, Plainview, in August of 1971. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. LeRoy (Rosetta) Johnson, Minneiska; Mrs.

Marvin (Rosella) Arends, Kellogg, and Mrs. Wels (Betty) Staudacher, Minneiska; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One son, Leo; one daughter, Evelyn, two brothers and two sisters have died. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Buckman-Schierts Funeral Home, Wabasha, the Rev.

Luther Pennington, Weaver United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Minneiska. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. Tuesday until time of services Wednesday. Mrs.

Martha Wood WHITEHALL, Wis. (Special) Mrs. Martha Wood, 85 Whitehall, died Saturday evening at Trempealeau County Hospital, here. The former Martha Johnson, she was born Feb. 20, 1886 in the Town of Hale to Charles and Anna Granlund Johnson and was married to Ralph Wood 27, 1906 in Whitehall.

A lifelong area resident, she was an associate member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church here. Survivors are: a son, Harold Wood, Whitehall; daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Helen) Ringstad, Coon Valley, four grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. Her husband. five sisters and two brothers have died.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Saviour's Church, the Rev. Clifford Ritland officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln cemetery. Friends may call at Johnson Funeral Chapel today from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

and at the church Tuesday after noon. Alfred Meyer NELSON, Wis. -Alfred Ewald Wilhelm Meyer, 74, Nelson, died at 8:40 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Wabasha, Minn.

The John and Elizabeth Meyer, he was born at Loganville, March 8, 1897. He married Amanda Weise Oct. 7. 1923, at Loganville. They lived at Sauk Prairie, until moving to Nelson in December, 1966.

He was a member Grace Lutheran Church, Survivors are: his wife; one son, David, Helenville, six Nelson; Mrs. Howard (Lorna) daughters, Mrs. Irma, Volz, Hanson and Mrs. Donald (Evelyn) Horton, Lodi, Mrs. Milton (Rosella) Hanson, St.

Paul Park, Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Spartz, Dundas, and Mrs. Frank (Violet) Hatcher, Sauk City, 25 grandchildren; seven great dren, and one sister, Mrs. Meta Voss, Loganville.os will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church, the Rev.

Robert T. Beckman officiating, with burial in Nelson Cemetery. Friends may call at StohrHagen Funeral Home, Alma, Thursday afternoon and evening, then at the church Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. Irvin T. Sparling TREMPEALEAU, Wis.

(Special) Funeral services for Irvin T. Sparling, Trempealeau, were held Thursday at the Olsen Hall Memorial Chapel, Grand Army Home for Veterans, King, Wis. The Rev. Paul K. Wells, officiated.

Cremains were buried in Lake View Memorial Park, Oshkosh, Wis. He died at the King Veterans Hospital on Feb. Two veterans from Trempealeau Winston Elkins and Howard A. Coyle participated in the military funeral service. He was born here Jan.

30, 1899, to William and Ella Sparling. A member of the Trempeaeau Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Sparling had served in World Wars I and II. Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Virginia) Cisewski, Chicago, and six grandchildren. Mrs.

Sophia Skrukrud LANESBORO, Minn. Mrs. Sophia Skrukrud, 90, Lanesboro, died Sunday at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Rushford, where she had lived four years. The former Sophia Erickson, she was born in Pilot Mound Township, Fillmore County, May 3, 1881, to Torger and Martha Erickson. She married Engebert O.

Skrukrud June 10, 1908, and they farmed in the Pilot Mound until retiring to Lanesboro 1917. He has died. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lanesboro. Survivors are: one lando, Lanesboro; one daughter, Mrs. Irvin (Ila) Bornfleth, Chatfield, one grandchild; one brother, Melvin Erickson, Pilot Mound, and one sister, Mrs.

Ed (Clar a) Knutson, Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Rev. Leon Holtan officiating, with burial in Lanesboro Cemetery. Friends call at Johnson Funeral Home, Lanesboro, day after 2 p.m., and at the church Wednesday after 12:30 p.m.

Mrs. Florence Siegle EYOTA, Minn. 1. (Special) Mrs. Florence Siegle, 63, died Sunday at her Eyota home following short illness.

The former Florence Kramer, she was born Aug. 17, 1908 in Elkhart Lake, to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kramer and was married to the Rev. John Siegle Sept.

2, 1933. The couple moved to Eyota in 1968. She was a member of the Olmstead Community Hospital Auxiliary and the women's guild of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Eyota. Survivors are: a son, James, Eyota; two grandsons, and a brother, Harvey Kramer, West Bend, Wis.

Her husband died in 1968. An infant son also has died. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, the Rev.

Gordon Goodfellow officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at JohnsonSchriver Funeral Home, Plainview, from 4 p.m. Tuesday to noon Wednesday and after 1 p.m. at the church.

Charles V. Everett THEILMAN, Minn. (Special) -Charles V. Everett, 76, Theilman, died early today at Clearwater, where he was visiting. Funeral arrangements are being made by the PetersonSheehan Funeral Home, Lake City, Minn.

Joseph B. Dumback INDEPENDENCE, Wis. (Special) Joseph B. Dumbeck, 86, Independence, died Saturday at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall, after an illness of five years. The son of Albert and Mary Woychik Dumback, he was born at Independence May 13, 1885.

He married Victoria Marsolek Nov 21, 1910. They farmed until retiring. His wife died in 1961. Survivors are: two sons, Allie, Independence, and Edward, Milwaukee; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Marion) Winter, Milwaukee; three grandchildren; one great and one sister, Frances Norbeck, San Diego, Calif.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ss. (AP) Edmund Nix, former U.S. attorney for Wisconsin's western district, announced his candidacy for Congress today. Nix, a Democrat, will seek the 3rd District seat now held by Republican Vernon Thomson. Nix was Eau Claire county's dis rict attorney for six years, and then spent four years as a U.S. attorney.

He recently resigned his position as a U.S. magistrate. Nix will be opposed on the Democratic ticket by at least one other candidate, Ray Short, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Plateville. Minneapolis man held in shooting MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) No charges had been filed Sunday in the shooting deatn of a 29-year-old north Minneapolis man, police said a man arrested Saturday was still being held.

Police said Alfred Love was found shot in his home early Saturday. They said the large caliber bullet which entered the back of Love's head apparently was fired from inside the house. dependence, the Rev. Herbert Zoromski officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Faldet, Hixton Rt. 2, who died Saturday of injuries received in a truck-car accident Friday night near Mauston, were held this afternoon at Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Church. The Rev. Robert Bipes officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Jensen Home, Hixton, had charge of arrangements. Stanley F. Losinski FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. Funeral services for Stanley F. Losinski, Fountain City Rt.

1, were held today at St. Stanislaus Church, Arcadia, the Rev. Edward Sobezyk officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona, where the Rev.

Donald Grubisch, St. Stanislaus Church, Winona. conducted serv ices in the cemetery chapel. Members of Tickfer-Erickson American Legion Post No. 17, Arcadia, conducted military services.

Pallbearers were Jerome and Ronald Borzyskowski, Clarence Losinski, Dallas Hannon, Wilfred Rothering and Ernest Kamla. Honorary pallbearers were Albert A. and LaVern Sobotta, John Pierzina, Engene Slaby, Peter Sonsalla and Peter G. Bautch. Fresh snow to be followed by lower readings Winona received a fresh cover of snow this morning with colder temperatures predicted when a clearing trend begins later in the day.

Temperatures Sunday peaked out at a high of 37, then dropped to a low of 24 this morning. Under overcast skies it was 27 at noon today and a low of zero to 10 above was forecast for tonight. Tuesday's high will be between 15 and 20 Snow, which nad accumulated to a depth of one-fourth inch by noon, was to end later in the day and skies should be fair to partly cloudy Tuesday. The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office said Freeberg died Sunday after being struck by a car on a Shoreview street driven by William George Johnson, 25, also of that St. Paul suburb. Arneson died Sunday of in juries he suffered Saturday night when the car in which he was riding went off a Chippewa County road south of Asbury, in southwestern Minnesota.

A retirement celebration ended in tragedy at Orlando, Saturday when a traffic accident claimed the life of a Minnesota woman and an Ohio couple. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Gorghild Nestor, 49, St. Louis Park, her brother in law, Myron Nestor, 65, and his wife, Helen, 67, Columbus, Ohio, died in a two-car crash.
