Frank Medina, Enrique Aguirre, Robert Ricliy and Catarlno Lopez, the three American born Mexican boys arrested by Juarez rurales and placed in the army barracks, may possibly be released soon, but it is more likely thajt they will spend many days in confinement, according to the conclusion formed after hearing a statement made the colonel the army, in whose custody they are. The colonel frankly says no charge has been registered the young men, but mat 'their case has been reported to the officials of the military zone in Chihuahua, and no steps can be taken until orders come from there. American consul T.

I). Edwards, who made a demand for the release of the boys, said this afternoon that he hoped some tavora'ble news would be received today from Ciiinuahua, but he admitted time there was 'but little on which to base such a hope. The consul, after the colonel refused night releAse the boys, telegraphed to ambassador Thompson in Mexico City, 'but he he had' but little expectation of securing any results through that source soon, as the diplomatic rules will require considerable and ambassador Thompson is himself in Kansas City at present on a leave. The American charge will have to first take the matter up with the Mexican government, which will refer it to ambassador Creel, it is said, for investigation. Then he must report back to his government, after which an order will be given, either to hold or release the men in custody.

Creel in this instance is both governor of Chihuahua, the state that is holding the lads, and ambassador to the United States. The diplomatic maneuvers will take time, so, unless the military authorities in Chihuahua order their release without waiting for an investigation, there is a prospect for a long period of captivity for the young Americans. The most peculiar phase of the case is that it seems to come under the head of a military offense, over which the judge in Juarez has no jurisdiction. The prisoners are being held in the barracks, an entirely unusual proceeding in previous cases of a similar nature. Consul Edwards said today that an order had been issued by president Diaz prohibiting the introduction of firearms into the zone in which Juarez is situated, but that order only contemplated the confiscation of weapons so imported, and he was not aware of any law under which the owners of weapons could be prosecuted for carrying them across the border.

The colonel of the army said, however, that he had orders to arrest all persons found taking weapons into the state of Chihuahua. As there is no charge registered against the boys, the real cause for their detention can only be conjectured. There are some persons in Juarez who believe a charge of attempting to aid the revolutionists by supplying them with guns will be made, while others believe there are political reasons for w'ishing to get young Aguirre in custody, and it was predicted this afternoon by Mexicans living in Juarez that he at least, w'iil have a hard time to secure his liberty, as. besides the unpopularitj- of his father with tne Mexican government because of his alleged revolutionary connections, the son has also incurred the displeasure of some of the officials. The mother and of young Aguirre called yesterday evening to see consul Edwards about the case, and relatives of the other men were in consultation with the army officers.

When a Herald reporter applied at the barracks today for permission to see the boys, he was told that he could see them only by authority of the colonel, and when that officer was called upon he could be seen. 3 Saturday and Monday will be observed as holidays on the New York and Boston markets. 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 MONEY AND METALS.
