0 i r- rV By PAT THOMPSON MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Ray Corbin, backed up by a 12-hit attack that included Rich Reese and Eric Soderholm home runs, felt he redeemed himself against the Boston Red Sox. "Just say you did what you get paid to do," interjected Minnesota Twins' teammate it walked only 24 two Thursday night. It was an impressive victory for Corbin and the Twins. The Red Sox came into the game winning 10 of their last 12 starts. The Twins, although they've won ttirce of four now, had a one-game winning streak.

Only three pitchers had been able to finish a game in 40 outings against the Red Sox. The game was played in complete contrast to those Charlie Manuel, who robbed Carlton Fisk of extra bases in the second by crashing against the left field fence catch a fly; Corbin, with his first hit of the season, and Tovar slammed doubles for two more runs in the second. Third inning errors by Benequiz and Ben Oglivit produced another run. Carew's suicdie squeeze hit York Yankees five runs in the first two innings In an eventual 9-6 loss in his last start. But that was Corbln's only bad outing since he was called out of the bullpen to become a starter in late June.

He now has a 5-2 record with two shutouts. "I'm throwing the same as I was in the bullpen," said Corbin. "Only I'm getting the chance to pitch now. What has surprised me, though, has been my control. I've been able to Reese, playing for first baseman Harmon Kiliebrew ho was resting, hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Ray Culp, 5 8, and Soderholm, who has not hit homers in three straight games, connected for a two-run clout in the seventh off Gary Pe'ters.

LINDEN Daily News Sports Writer Early in the season, followers of local late model drivers at Tri-Oval Speedway had three people to watch; lately, however, there has ben only one. John Foegen is still running and running and run-ing, but Al Schueler and Fred Prudoehl seem to have dropped out altogether. That's only partially correct. True, Schueler sold his car and won't be racing in the future; but Prudoehl's absence is temporary and, hopefully, about to end. Prudoehl's problems began over a month ago when he just barely avoided blowing up his 350 cubic inch racing engine.

"We put on a new intake manifold," he explained, "and the bolts were too long, so they rubbed on the pushrods. We caught it time, and the three were offensive tackle Tony Liscio of the Cowboys and receiver Fred Hill and defen sive back Joe Scarpati of the APG0 Stations Philadelphia Eagles. "The good engine is ready to go now as a matter of it's been back together for two weeks it's just a question of when we get the time to put it back in. "When we do get the car going again, we're going to be racing it more than we have been. We've only been running one night a week and you can't do that and expect to be competitive you don't get used to the car and you don't get it handling the way it should.

Besides that, we're racing mostly for the fun of it, but we've got to win some money so we can keep the car going and have fun. "We're going to start racing two or three nights a week: at Tri-Oval and maybe Kasson. Skip would like to go up to Rice Lake, and all the fairs are coming up. The season's only half over, So there's plenty of time left. The second half of the season begins, more or less officially, at Tri-Oval tonight with in street and hobby class racing.

Bud Britt was the master ol the situation as he pitched the winners to their ninth victory, allowing two walks while striking out five and giving up no hits. The win brings the righthander's record to 4-2 for the season. Adding to his mound statistics, he chalked up a double and a single.

Dave Krenz provided the needed offense with a pair of doubles and five runs batted in.
