WARREN, PA. WARREN COUNTY OBSERVER, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1961 PAGE SEVENTEEN A Heartwarming New Play CROSSWORD PUZZLE Answer to Puzzle By HOWARD TAUBMAN (c) New York Times Service NEW YORK A heartwarming integrity shines through and which arrived Tuesday night at the Martin Beck Theatre. An endearing asset in any theatre work, it is remarkable in a musical. The warmth in and is drawn from two sources. The brighter flame is fed by the spirit of affirmation represented by Israel and its dedicated people, who are working to make real the ancient dream of a land flowing with milk and honey.

The other basis of the quality is its respect for human beings. Although its comedy is not sparkling and often recalls commonplace routines of second avenue, it does not play false with its characters or turn them into cliches of show business. First, then, a consideration of what and does with its setting, which is Israel. Although a musical is not a mentary, there is a ring of authenticity in the atmosphere. When the young folks whirl into an Independence Day hora, with their elders singing and prancing on the fringes, there is the flavor of a joyous folk festival.

When a triple wedding is solemnized in Yemenite style, there is a sense of antique tradition blended with a feeling of universal ecstasy. When the young Sabras celebrate their reclaiming of the barren soil of the Negev in an elated dance, there is a communication of how it feels to be devoted passionately to an ideal. The main story is a bittersweet romance between two American travelers, an attractive widow and an elderly man whose marriage has been a failure to him, and it is told with touching honesty. As a counterpoint there is the sentimental, comic and in the end disarming search for a man for Clara Weiss, another widow. In addition, enough of the trials and ardors of young Israeli couples is related to Actor Puts Some People in Prison On a Personal Basis By JOSEPH FINNIGAN HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Mel Prestidge is an actor who can claim fans in and out of prison- some of whom he put there personally.

Prestidge, who plays Honolulu Police Lt. Danny Quan on ABC- series, is a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff when he playing cops and robbers for the show. Mel, of Hawaii, English and Japanese extraction, works all night as a real life police officer and spends his days on the Warner Bros. Studio sound stages. "We pick up all the prisoners at sub stations and take them to the county said Mel, describing his official duties as deputy.

least half the prisoners we pick up recognize me," he said. 1 acknowledge it when they say seen my shows. I have to watch out for some rough prisoners because ride the heck out of Mel said some prisoners try to insult him when they find out an actor. They might needle me by saying a phony or 'an actor whose not worth he said. I tell them that as long as on duty, a deputy and they are prisoners.

If they step out of line, I put them back in line. Then they know not fooling Mel often runs into the same old faces on his rounds-chronic drunks and other jail prone people. Many are polite enough to remind him that fans of the series. Prestidge is serious about being a cop, in real life and make believe. like to do a good job in the he said.

don't want the department to be ashamed of what doing. Actually, the series has helped me in police vork. a diversion of activity that I sketch in a rich background. Don Appell has written a book that is as modest and simple as it is engaging, and Jerry Herman has provided songs that range from functional to exultant. His hora has the necessary rhythmic fervor; his and and pay genial respects to Israel, and in Was and Will Follow he conveys the conviction of personal emotion.

The taste and imagination that have gone into and are memorably reflected in the scene in which a young Sabra, whose American wife reveals her discontent with life in Israel, sings Will Follow The tune itself with its turn of phrase that reminds one of Hebrew incantation is intense. Then the young man, played, sung and danced with gusto by Tommy Rail, goes through a choreographed pantomime that sums up his affection for the land. It is a moment of stirring emotional truth. Other scenes are not far behind, and the wedding in Yemenite style is its equal in integrity of mood. Albert Mar re, who staged the production, and Donald Saddler, who devised the exuberant choreography, deserve high marks for maintaining a high standard of credibility and verve.

As the mature romantic figure Robert Weede plays with appealing directness and sings with uncommon largeness of voice; if he was suffering from a respiratory ailment Tuesday night, his baritone scarcely showed a trace of it. Mimi Benzell is a personable Ruth, and an accomplished singer, too. As for Molly Picon, what a spirited charmer she is! In the role of Clara, guiding spirit of a passel of American widows touring Israel and hunting eligible males, she performs with the poise and grace of an experienced hand who can convert corn into warm humor. When she winds up to her tribute to her late husband, with a flourish of dance steps, she is as gay as a young sprig. Lanna Sanders, Juki Arkin and Ellen Madison with Tommy Rail are ebullient young Israelis.
