As was his custom, Weiss started on his mail collection round on Sept. 28, carrying thirteen letter carriers to be distributed on their routes. At Livonia and Thatford having dropped his last letter carrier, he stepped to pick up mail. When he got back to the ancient car the engine had stopped. Weiss cranked it neglecting to throw it out of gear.
