Thursday, July 8, 1976 VM.ll MUKN i NO ilAK Harlingen Tenas Volley Has Share Of Champion Trees By OLD DIRT DAUBER Garden Editor Probably no similar area in the United States encompasses so many national champion trees as the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge south of Alamo which has five with the possibility that a sixth may be added to the list An ebony at the refuge has had long standing as a national champion but four new national champs were found in the wilds of this refuge They are the Texas porliena. Mexican ash. bluewood condalia or brazil, and mesquite discovered by Refuge Manager Wayne Shifflett and his assistaant at the time, Terry Fears III. and verified by the Texas Forest Association The porliena has a stem circumference of 32 inches, a height of 25 feet and crown spread of 32 feet Porliena is naturally a small tree and is locally called the soap-bush or guayacan Its hard, durable wood is used for fence posts and the bark once sold in Mexico as a soap for washing woolens Mexican or Berlandier ash, is also a small tree that grows in moist canyons and along streambanks in Central and west Texas The Santa Ana Refuge specimen has a circumference of 194 inches, height of 44 feet and crown spread of 40 feet Local lore credits the leaves of this tree as being offensive to rattlesnakes, and hunters sometime stuff their boots with the leaves to ward off snakes The new champion brazil, or bluewood condalia. is a more common species which often grows in vast thickets, especially in the Gulf Coast area.

Its wood is reputedly one of the hardest in the world and pollen from its flowers is used by bees to make some of the best honey available anywhere Another champion discovered at the refuge is of anall-too-com- mon species, the mesquite Truly a monstrous mesquite, it has a circumference of 150 inches, a height of 40 feet and crown spread of 36 feet Mesqutte is a species that spreads rapidly and, to the chagrin of ranchers, has commandeered thousands of acres of Texas grasslands in the past 50 years The Indians made this podlike fruit, which contains about 30 per cent sugar, into a dietary mainstay they called 'pmole Shifflett told us that he believes a tepeguaje on the refuge may also be a national champion but it has not been checked out Three other new national champion trees in Texas are hidden away in the pristine ruggedness of Big Bend National Park, according to the forest association They are Vesey oak. Chisos red oak and Texas pistache All are new species to the state and national tree registeries Unfortunately, you find these patriarches on a pleasant Sunday afternoon's drive as you could those at Santa Ana They are so far off the beaten path that the nominator. Benny Simpson of Abilene, describes their location by longitude and latitude coor dinates Most of Texas Big Trees listed by the Forest association are found closer to civilization Other new national champions include a Lindheimer hackberry, located back of Fischer's General Store in Fischer (Comal County) not toofarfrom the Valley; lime pncklyash found in Bee County near Beeville, also near the Valley, at the site of an abandoned historic underground kiln The list also includes an evergreen sumac in the City of Austin and a prairie flameleaf sumac near Canyon Reservoir in Comal County near New Braunfels Texas, with a total of 56 national champion trees, is top ped only by Hawaii, Flonda and Michigan Who finds big trees' Many people find them along the road or on their property and send an inquiry to the Texas Forest Service. College Station, TX 77843 A few people have made hobbies of finding champion trees State champions automatically become nominees for national championships The National big tree program is conducted by the American Forestry Association Anyone finding what he thinks is a champion tree of any species should notify the Texas Forest Station and one of its represen tatives will follow up and measure the nominated tree for verification The Texas Big Tree registry is updated about every six months and occasionally an existing champion is succeeded by an even larger specimen I NATIONAL CHAMPION This Mexican ash at the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge near Alamo is a new national champion. Manager Wayne Shifflett of the refuge is admiring its ruggedness.
