M. Dougherty, of Columbus, Ohio, is here on business. Mr. Dougherty was candidate for the United States senate from Ohio at the last session of the state legislature. He is accompanied by Mrs.

Nov. board of trustees of the city of Das Cruces, has passed and approved the ordinauce granting to the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph company a 25 year frauctiise for its telephone system.

The plan of the company is to demolish the old system entirely, replacing it with a new common battery system, the automatic bell, so that with the lifting of the receiver from tlie hook, the connection is made with central witliout ringing the bell, as is done now with telephones of this type. The improvements together with the Exchange biiildnig, which is to be modern, and in keeping with the business blocks of Cruces, will cost approximately $r) 0 0 0 I.and has been purchased on Griggs street adjoining the armory, on which the Exchange building will be erected. Mr. Clarke, who was here in behalf of the company stated that would recommend, and strongly urge that work be commenced as the present plans involve the displacing of all the many wires, lines and i)oles that are all over town, and conspicuously present on Main street and in their place will be a cable system, with all poles to be erected in alleys. The Democratic rally was held last night at the armory.

Antonio I.ucero spoke and the Young Democratic club gave a dance. George Curry, former governor of New Mexico, arrived in town Tuesday and will remain for a day or so. J. G. Stuart, of El Manzanel orchard, has his apple crop all picked and has a force of xnen working at packing and sorting. Most of his crop has been sold far in advance, and Mr. Stuart figures Ills apple crop as worth $20,000 this year from his orchard, about $15,000 of which will be profit.

Sumner Center has sold his tract for a homesite consisting of one acre, facing west on the Alameda road north of the city, to Dr. Hart, who is a new arrival from Council Bluffs. Dikes Sidewalks. Sometimes there is so much that it will not all go into the without first running over the walks and into the stores. Several thoughtful merchants have constructed concrete dikes along edges of their sidewalks, in some instances three feet high, with openings in front of the doors through which the people enter from the street and into which, at night when it looks stormy, heavy wooden gates are slipped, just like Irrigation ditches. This turns the water out of the stores if a big storm comes up and sends the water rushing on down the street. Throughout the country around Silver City, which is the county seat of Grant county, greatest mineral county in the state, there are many small farms and in the valleys, and fine fruits arid vegetables are raised.

Some of these little farms are also productive in hay and other crops, but the mining wealth Of the country is what has made Silver City and it is going to make Silver City even greater. It has a well built and furnished armory for Its company of New national guard and is in every way a modern town, a town with a history and a future that looks better tlian the past, which is tliat many towns cannot boast of.

Its 3500 population Is progressive, and. its constant contact with the world keeps It abreast of the times. Some of the best traveling shows are seen at the Silver City opera house, and the mining promotnrs and officials, health and others who daily crowd the place from all parts of the country help make up a civilization that is cosmopolitan, progressive and enlightened. Being the railroad center for such a largo area, the commeri ial traveling popuhition is always large and samples may be seen every day in all of the hotels.
