Court refuses to halt execution of condemned 2-time slayer ATMORE, Ala.

(AP) Condemned double murderer Arthur Lee Jones who came within 16 hours of execution in 1984, met calmly with relatives Thursday as he waited to die after midnight in Alabama's electric chair. The U.S. Supreme Court refused Thursday on a 5-4 vote to delay the execution. On death row at Holman Prison, Jones visited relatives and began eating a last meal of pink salmon, cole slaw, candied yams, chilled peaches and a grape drink. He asked to wear a suit and tie to the electric chair, rather than prison whites, said Prison Commissioner Freddie Smith.

Gov. George C. Wallace, who has the power to commute Jones' sentence to life in prison, said at a news conference Thursday afternoon that he has made no "clear-cut decision." "I'm thinking about the whole Obituaries Mar. 21. 1986 matter and have been thinking about it all week," said Wallace.

"It's a very, very difficult matter. At the same time, the law is the law." Jones first went to prison at age 17. He was sentenced to die for killing William Hosea Waymon, a 71-yearold cab driver, and a 21-year-old storekeeper, Vaughn Thompson, in separate robberies in 1981. Jones, who also goes by the name Abdul Sibar Baaque, claims he is innocent and that he was framed by police. He said it was against his Muslim religion to steal or kill.

"I'm satisfied with my life," he said in an interview this week. "There's nothing wrong with my life. I don't do the things most people do. Every time I turn around, they've got some cooked-up case with no facts to support them." Race was not an issue in Jones' appeals, but opponents of the death penalty have argued that it is im- LOCAL DEATHS Jay Calvin Langston 81, of 725 N. 25th St.

Staunton of Big Timber, memorials may be made to Sweetgrass Memorial Hospital or Gonzaga University, Father Art Dussault, Spokane WN or the Yellowstone Art Center. Say it with Flowers Sent With Special Area Allied Florists a 12 in VA posed with disproportionate frequency against blacks. Prison records dating back to 1927 show that 125 black men and one black woman, 26 white men and two white women have been executed in Alabama. The last black to be executed in the state was put to death in 1962. Opponents of the death penalty rallied on the Capitol steps in Montgomery at noon Thursday, with Mary Wiedler of the Civil Liberties Union of Alabama calling it "a barbaric throwback to the days of slavery and branding, unacceptable in a civilized society." In Baldwin County, however, the mother of one of Jones' victims said "justice will be done" when Jones is put to death.

"I don't think he (Jones) should have gotten all these second chances," said Elma Thompson. "Vaughn didn't get a second chance.".
