WANT ADS WORK WONDERS CALL 872-3033 corsicana Daily Sun SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1974 3A Long locks losing fashion battle, but barber shops changed forever NKW YORK (AP) Short hair is making a strong comeback, and not all. For the first in years a shortage of barbers in nearly every major city and enrollees are standing in line to get into barber school. A great many of those new enrollees are women. I the latest word from the BBAIA which, in this age of unisex hair parlors, stands for Barbers, Beauticians and Allied Industries Assn. The allied industries, incidentally sprays and rinses and all that are having a heyday.

The straggly look is gone and the athletes seem to be right out front in the new tidiness trend. you seen Dandy Don Meredith on the said Richard A. Plumb, the general president of the BBAIA. the latest look full over the ear, full in back, short on top the kind of haircut you can get at a barber What Plumb confirms is that the biggest news about hair these days is that it is no longer news. Gone, apparently, are the days of long hair as a symbol of defiance, of schoolmasters battling students over the length of their locks, of a judge making headlines by sentencing a longhaired miscreant to a shearing.

According to Plumb, the era of barber shop failures ended in 1972 the year the play folded on Broadway and began a reverse trend. The new barber shops which he says are opening up, however, are a far cry from the old familiar white-tiled shops with the ball game turned up loud, the razor strop dangling from the chair and the smell of witch hazel in the air. years ago a person could open a barber shop on an investment of $300 to Plumb said. what with plush carpets and piped-in music and all, it costs $25,000 to $50,000. reason for the change in the way the shops he said, "is that women are operating an increasing number of them.

This is a reversal, too. When men started letting their hair grow they had to go to hairdressers to get a haircut, or rather a styling. Now women customers are coming to barber Plumb makes a distinction between a barber shop, even one with carpeting, and a fancier for men. One big difference is the price. Plumb said the average price charged by members of his organization is $6.50, which is about double what it was a couple of years ago, but less than half what customers pay at some other places.

Economic downturn or not, sales of hair products, especially aerosol sprays, continue to reflect a boom that began two years ago. the hairstyle got longer men found out, just like women, that they had to do something to keep it said Plumb. of tonics and sprays and rinses are now a large part of a income about four times what it was 10 years In the long argument over long hair, it seems, contempt has finally bred familiarity. Retail sales jumped from $90 million in 1965 to $120 million last year, with aerosol sprays leading the way. Dyes, too, have leapt from $4 million in sales two years ago to $15 million last year.

Where a tightened economy will send the market is guess. Manufacturers have become especially tightlipped about their marketing research. They do feel that the big hurdle, acceptance of products once considered strictly for women, has been passed and that men no longer have misgivings about doting on their hair, especially young men. County notes Alternatives to farmers who missed planting wheat By GENESEARS County Extension Agent SOIL AND CROP CONDITION Rains this week have kept fields and pastures at near saturation point. This situation has existed for several weeks keeping farmers and ranchers from doing any field work.

Most farmers are way behind in land preparation for next years crop. Many farmers have been ready to put out fertilizer and other preparatory steps for next years crop since back in October, but due to continuous wet fields, these farmers have just been prepared to work but no work. We have several farmers that have failed to get their wheat crop planted in the fall due to the continuous wet fields. During the week, we discussed this problem with two farmers and feel that they have two or three alternatives at this time. First they could go ahead when possible and plant the winter varieties that we normally plant.

We do not think this would be a good alternative, however. Second, they could secure one of two Mexican varieties of wheat either cajema or penjarno and WE'RE TAKING THAI TRIP! BUT, HOW DO WE AVOID THE HASSLE OF ARRANGEMENTS? LOBBY FIRST NATIONAL BANK Ph. 872-4881 Right in style Although only 8, Rob Nimmo knows just how to keep up with today's changing hair styles cut it short. Corsicana barbers and hair stylists agree that shorter hair for men is becoming fashionable again. (Staff photo by Monte Smith) Clippers cut closer in Corsicana, too plant as soon as possible.

These varieties are not high quality type wheat and if planted should be seeded at a double rate since they do not stool out as our regular winter wheat does. This would not be the best alternative though. Third and perhaps the best alternative when all conditions are considered would be to plant the field in grain sorghum. Since we still have time before grain sorghum planting time, this should be the best alternative at this time. BIG PROGRAM: The annual Big Result Demonstration Dinner Program will be held on Friday, Jan.

3. The program will be held at the Navarro Hotel. The speaker for the event will be Dr. Bill Pope, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture at Texas University.
