Over 450 Clubs Now Active In S. Bv LUCV WALLACE MISSION From the desire of a mother whose son was serving in the Navy to talk to other mothers of Navy an orgamiation which began as little more than a neighborhood -sem ing grow'n into a nation-wide organisation which is during mar times an important factor in providing service to Navy enlisted men and their families. Several years ago Mrs. Emma Jones of McAllen found that when received a letter from her son, Jimmy, who had enlisted in the nation's peace-time Navy no friends were as interested in the Navy news told in the letters as one or two chance acuamtances who also had sons in the Navy. Mrs Jones mas inspired with the Idea to call a meeting of the wo.

men mhom she to have sons serving in the Navy. She knew that each would enjoy telling of the latest letter from her and all would en)oy trying to find out more about the Navy. Other mothers whom she contacted were interested and the idea gained ground fter she had talked to George A. Kramer, Navy recruiting officer in the Valley area at that time As a result, a Valley meeting was held June 1936 to organize Navy Mothers first the United States, Mrs Jones was elected president. Mrs.

P. Lawson. San Benito, vice president: Mrs Payne, Harlingen, secretary- tieasurer. Other charter members were Mrs. George BevU and Mrs.

Mrs C. L. Vernon Pharr. Mrs F. Newsome, San Benito, and Mrs.

Henry Hantx. Harlingen Interest in the organisation grew as other mothers learned of the organisation and more attended the monthly meetings held in succession at the different towns represented By March, IW1. the ganisation was strong enough and had mapped its objective so well that a constitution and by-laws was needed When the constitution formed its authors wrote a preamble hich tells the guiding force behind the organisation: will never judge another mother or her son until 1 first place myself in her place and her boys as my own. I will be loyal to the Colors my boy represents and ill never say or do anthmg that will bring dishonor to either Today, 13 sears since Mrs Jones first began to think of banding to- getrier other mothers hose sons wore Navy uniform Mc.e over 4VI clubs scattered over the nation as more mothers have become from the same urge which inspired Mrs Jones originally. The mar has brought an added challenge to the services the Mothers were performing in peace times and with the expansion of the Navy and the greater numbers of men in that service, the number of.

interested women has doubled and Each month brings news of more clubs that have been inland villages, huge cities, and coast towns Annual conventions are held by the nation-mide organisation. Several vears after the tion reached nation-wide scope, the units in the coast cities mhere the Nsvy fleet puts in began to perform a service for the boss much like the U. S. O. does today near Army camps and Navy bases Navy mothers in those towns, assisted financially by units in inland states, established hostess rooms mhere the boys could go for a am-ay from as their ships m-ere in port, groups of Navy mothers acted as hostesses at the club rooms, serving refreshments, and offering interest and companionship to the youths.

That same type of program is being continued but mar-time activities have overshadowed it When a ship is lost at sea, and the men are re-outfitted, it is hard for many of them to obtain razors and other toilet articles to replace those lost. When hundreds of men are sent home to complete recovery from injuries received in battle, the need for hospital supplies increase overnight especially in hospitals recently converted from hotels and resorts. Members of the Valley Navy FIRST NAVY MOTHERS In the group presented in the photo above are the women who banded themselves together in 1930 as the first Navy Mothers Club in the United The ing officer ifl H.
