Mock said he believes the fire season is shaping up closer to the less disastrous year of 1994. "We still have quite a ways to go to catch up to 1988," he said. But on Monday, he submitted a request for more firefighting resources, anticipating that warm, dry weather will continue.

Normally this time of year she said she would expect to see moisture levels of between 13 and 18 percent. Some are already at 12 percent and declining. "When it gets into the low teens, that's bone-dry in the larger fuels," she said. "If it's bone-dry it will snap and break." It will also make excellent firewood. Residents of the Musselshell River basin are especially jumpy.

It's the third dry year in a row, and they've learned the hard way what that can mean. Last year, Musselshell County had to battle three major fires one of which consumed 34,000 acres.
