Soiiwannet'ke "Maedchen in Uniform," imported from Germany where it is scoring; a sensational hit (as it is in other European cities), was preriewed last evening at the Criterion Theatre by an invited audience who found the picture a SINGLE-HANDED, HE SAVED HER FROM THE SAVAGE TRIBE IN WHICH SHE HAD BEEN REARED I But what could he do with her? Take her back to civilization? Beautiful though she was, she was still a savage! Leave her behind? That would mean her certain death Yet here he was alone with a primitive in an island jungle stimulating and effective account of life in a strict school for Prussian officers daughters. If the film is meant to depict anything: other than the normal activities of girls who are bound to dormitory regulations, this reviewer caught only slight suggestions of abnormality.

The picture for most 5. part is a simple and sympathetic one, which proves i in its theme that the stoat and stern headmistresses of such schools often do not understand child psy chology in the least. 'V There's the case of little Manuela von Meinhardis Her mother is dead. In the midst of this scene of law and order as rigidly disciplined as an army barrack there's one teacher who seems to understand the shy little Manuela.

I UNITED ARTISTS PICTURE MUSE I invokes an honor system which they heartily appreciate. Manuela, hungry for love and tenderness, grows to worship Fraulein von Bern-burg.

However, no favoritism must be shown, so the pretty instructress endeavors to conceal her reciprocated affection' for the little girl. When Manuela is given chief role in a play, she does extremely well. And Frauiein von Bernburg congratulates her warmly. After the performance there's a party with punch and all. There Manuela loudly proclaims her love for the teacher and thereby causes an order from the headmistress that the pupil and instructress shall never again talk to one another.

Fraulein von Bernburg isincensed at the injustice of the situation. And there's a most spectacular climax which makes your heart go out to the white-faced, love-starved little Manuela. The conclusion is highly satisfying. And indeed the whole picture is extremely interestingly done as to continuity, performances and direction. Besides the German which isn't hard to follow, there are superimposed English titles.

So you'll thoroughly understand "Maedchen in Uniform" as long as you don't try to interpret any hidden meaning in the script. This Pall will mark the come-back performances of Clara Bow and Alice White, as you now know. And we're hereby informing you that the ladies are not alone in their attempt to recapture film laurels.
