tournament BISMARCK, N.D. The Billings Royals picked up their first win at a baseball tournament here Friday. With a 12-4 victory over Sioux Falls, S.D., in the day's first game, the Royals improved to 1-2 at the event. Justin Deutscher went all five innings and only allowed one earned run as the Royals beat up on Sioux Falls. Josh Shannon provided some power, with a homer for Billings.

Teammate Justin Todd went 2-for-3 and hit a double. Royals manager Gary Ahlgren said the second game was a "pitcher's duel." Both pitchers went the distance, but Minot scored two runs in the eighth inning for a 3-1 victory. Games at the tournament are only scheduled to last seven innings. Ahlgren said Royals pitcher Schain Irion allowed only one earned run. "I'm not unhappy with the way the kids have played, we hit the ball hard but it was right at people," said Ahlgren by telephone.

"We're learning. The pitching has been real good, we just need to swing the bats with more consistency All in all, we're seeing more improvement, which is what we need to see."
