PREP SCHEDULE SATURDAY CLASS AA Billings West at Billings Senior, 1:30 p.m. Davits Stadium Eke email at Helena High. 1 30 Pokes' foe BYU is puzzling team By JOHN MOSSMAN Associated Press Sports Writer Utah's drive toward the Western Athletic Conference football title likely will be decided this Saturday or next, as the Utes take on the only other two unbeaten conference teams in back-to-back weekends.

Girls basketball ferent style of play, featuring the option quarterbacking of sophomore Bruce Hill, the running of juniors Willie Hamilton and Jim Upchurch, and the pass-catching of sophomore Theopolis Bell. Although scoring an average of just 23 points per game, the Wildcats have given up an average of only 13.7. "This has got to be one of the best match-ups of the year," says Meek.

"Both of us have a well-balanced offense and both of us have a good, sound defense. Their big advantage, of course, will be that they're playing at home. Otherwise, it will be a real even-steven ball game." The CSU-UTEP game might turn out to be a high scoring affair, since both teams have been unable to put together effective defenses. But both clubs had sputtering offenses last week, the Rams bowing to Wyoming 35-3 and UTEP losing to New Mexico 49-0. Ram Coach Sark Arslanian's comment that he expects the game "to turn into one of the passingest games of the season" seems about the only sure prediction.

CSU has a 1-3 WAC and 3-4 over-all record, and most of their success has come through the air. Jan Stuebbe led the na-tion in passing yardage until removing himself from last week's game because of a poor performance. Shiede is the leading WAC passer, completing 58 of 91 attempts for 734 yards and five touchdowns. And his back-up man. Randy Litchfield, has hit on 37 of 69 aerials for 390 yards and one score.

However, the Cowboys have a definite edge in rushing, averaging 216 yards per game compared with the Cougars' 142. Several BYU running backs have been hit by injuries and the team's leading rusher is a freshman, tailback Mark Terra-nova, with 294 yards in five games. Two of Wyoming's top three rushers, tailback Charlie Shaw and fullback Lawrence Gaines, missed the CSU game with injuries but are expected to be back against the Cougars. Linebacker Randy Gallu, out with a knee injury last week, also is expected to see action. But free safety Gary Wood suffered torn cartilege in his knee against the Rams and was operated on Sunday.

Wyoming leads in the BYU series, 23-17-3. will challenge Arizona State for the WAC title," Arizona Coach Jim Young says of this Saturday's encounter. Arizona, the surprise team of the WAC which has relied on a strong defense and a conservative, ball-control offense dominated by underclassmen, suffered its first loss last week, bowing to Texas Tech 31-17 in a non-conference game. That left the Wildcats with a 3-0 WAC mark and 5-1 over-all record. ASU, which plays non-league foe Oregon State at Portland Saturday night, is 3-0 and 6-0.

Utah, meanwhile, has hung in there with a 2-0 conference log and 4-2 over-all mark. Complicating the Utes' situation is the fact that they play just six WAC games one less than their competitors play so they can barely afford a loss. Three years ago Utah wound up with a 5-1 record and lost the title to ASU, which was 6-1. Young is mainly concerned about Utah's explosive offense, which has averaged 39 points per game. "They have some outstanding people on offense," Young says, citing quarterback Don Van Galder, running back Ike Spencer and flanker-return specialist Steve Odom.

"We have to work to keep them from getting the big play, which they have done every week, especially with Odom." Arizona counters with a dif The Director! w8 "This is a team whose record is no way indicative of the kind of talent it possesses," he said. "The Cougars have beaten us three straight years and we have not won a homecoming game in three years. So we have plenty of things to keep our feet on the ground." A great defensive performance last week against CSU by the Cowboys, now 3-3 and 2-2 in the WAC, pushed them from fifth to first in total defense in the conference. Through six games, Wyoming now has allowed opponents an average of only 302.5 yards per game, while the Cowboys rank third in team offense with an average of 387.2 yards. BYU ranks fourth in the conference in team offense, averaging 371.7 yards per game, but is second in the conference and third in the nation in passing at 230 yards per contest.

Miller leads the nation in receptions with 46 for 495 yards and two touchdowns, while Zwahlen has caught 15 passes for 193 yards. Young is a very puzzling football team," said University of Wyoming freshman coach Gene Huey after scouting the Cougars in their 52-12 loss to Arizona State last Saturday. But for the Cowboys, at least, the puzzle will be solved here Saturday in Wyoming's 51st annual homecoming game. And coach Fritz Shurmur is afraid the Cougars are just about ready to put that puzzle together. BYU, expected before the season started to have a shot at the Western Athletic Conference title, stands 0-2 in the league and has won only one of five games. One of the Cougars losses was a 22-13 setback at the hands of Colorado State, a team Wyoming defeated last Saturday, 35-3.

"BYU is the most physical team we have played all year and it is probably the biggest we will face," said Shurmur Wednesday. "Their defense scares me to death. They are so big (averaging 245 pounds in the line) that I don't know whether we can knock them out. "On offense, they throw the ball exceptionally well," Shurmur said. "Their quarterback, Gary Sheide, is an outstanding thrower and he has two talented receivers in Jay Miller and Lynn Zwahlen.
