25 DAILY NEWS 1QNXAY, HAY 4, 923 MOTION PICTURES. MOTION PICTURES. DEL RO'S INDIAN "RAMON IS RIVOLVS SAD LOVE FILM Keaton Scores Hit in "Steamboat Bill Paul Ash and Bebe at Paramount By IRENE THIRER. "Ramona." a United Artists production, directed by Edwin Carewe and presented at the Riyoli theatre. THE CAST? Rioiona.

T1 Bio f-HaxtUro Baxter Felipe Drew Senora. Vera Levis Juan Cacila Mioliael Visaroft Father SalTierderra. John J. Prince Mirda Mathilda Comoat Doubtless this "Ramona" of Dolores Del Rio's will fill the Eivoli theatre to capacity for some weeks to come. We know it yet we aren't sure just why it will.

Helen Hunt Jackson's story doesn't make a movie of especial box office appeal. The ending isn't happy. Tragedies occur throughout. The film's unreeling tends to depress rather than stimulate. And still, "Ramona" is of such stuff as flappers dote on and tired business men approve.

Director Carewe has given the picture entirely to his star, the charming Dolores. Graciously she has allowed Warner Baxter, who plays, her Indian husband, a few closeups, and she has granted, too, a scene or so to Roland Drew, who plays Felipe, the young Californian who loves her and doesn't quite lose her. Roland used to be Walter Goss of the Paramount school before he went to Hollywood, took a new name and new laurels. This "Ramon" abounds with picturesque scenery some backgrounds obviously painted, but others, startlingly beautiful. Miss Del Rio is a lovely creature, who carries out Director Carewe's orders to perfection.

In parts, we think they are rather trite orders, but of course the story on which this film is founded is not a new one. The movies claimed it for their own several years ago, and this version of it does not mark its cinema debut. Carewe's direction is sympathetic and it boasts a quality of fineness. You'll cry at "Ramon." Expect to, and take your biggest handkerchief along. "Steamboat Bill, a United Artists production, directed by Chuck Reisner and presented at the Rialto theatre.

Marion Byron Buster Keaton hits high with his newest comic offering, "Steamboat Bill, Jr." There are at least four new gags which make for real laughs, and that's enough for any movie. Screen Stars Train to Shine At Olympics By GEORGE SH AFFER. Hollywood, CaL, May 13. The Olympic games in Amsterdam in July are becoming of acute personal interest to Hollywood because of the number of Sim principals in active training: to compete.

Cuke Kahanamokn. who recently was restored to amateur status after having been rated a professional athlete for some years, is training to swim with the American team at Amsterdam. Tom Tyler, cowboy actor for P. B. O.

Paul leads the stage jazz band, introduces the performers in the revue and modestly tells the Paramount audience how glad he is to be on Broadway.

We, for one, certainly admire Ash for not speaking of past glories as he well might have done. He's a great master of ceremonies, and we're for him. The new jazz man's opening show at the Crossroads of the World isn't as good as it should have been. Mr. Ash's own protege, Milton Watson, sings in nice tenor.

The orchestra plays well. But the regular Paramount fare isn't op to standard. Neither is Bebe Daniels "Fifty-fifty Girl" up to the mark of her other speedy comedies. Bebe doesn't do any acrobatic stunts, and the story isn letcmng. it con cerns a gin and a man who go a-mining.
