Obviously there's no evidence, so far, that tht move has succeeded or ought to. It's about a radio talk-show host who is divorced and has a couple of daughters to cope with, sort of a "One Day at a Time" in reverse. It's a stale idea to begin with, one that requires an actor of eminent likability.

Stevenson can be 'hilariously funny at times he was a riot on Carson's show the other night, talking about things like dried-up supermarket lettuce and carts with wobbly wheels but he's simply not strong enough to carry a sitcom with weak comedic roots. When we chatted in L.A. last month, I reminded him that he had raved about last year's comedy series, "In the Beginning," a loudmouth Norman Lear show in which he played a Catholic priest. Quipped Mac with that half-smile of his, "I lied." He laid part of the blame on CBS chairman William S. Paley.

"Between the Catholic church and the hierarchy at CBS namely Mr. Paley, who hated the show we never really had much of a chance," said Mac. "We ended up alienating Catholics, boring non-Catholics, and substantiating Mr. Paley's decision that the show stunk." Besides, Mac adds: "That damn collar was killing me. Despite the fact that Stevenson, after leaving "M'AS'H," had flopped in another sitcom, "The McLean Stevenson Show," Lear put him right back in "Hello, Larry." "All the rest of Lear's stars have been basically theater people Bonnie Franklin, Carroll O'Connor, Jean Stapleton," Mac points out.

"I was the first television personality that he hired. But he felt I was right for the part of Larry, and there wasn't anything he could do about It." He adds, "I did not want to do another shouting, yelling, socially provocative, typical Norman Lear show. I didn't give a damn whether it had a message or not. I've had it with the new wave of young writers who write zany jokes and bizarre things and ought to be doing 'Saturday Night So I got writers with in excess of 200 years of Writing experience, including two guys who 8t.
