Timmer said that before he agreed to terms with the Cowboys, he had been contacted by the San Diego Chargers. If there is a strike but it's of a short duration, Timmer said the Cowboys gave him no indication what his future would be. "I know there's enough teams that are still interested in me that I could have another tryout next year," he said.

"So I know there's another opportunity out there." Timmer, who twice was a second-team All-Big Sky Conference pick for the Bobcats, was in the Jets' camp for five weeks and survived cuts down to the final 62 players, when both he and University of Montana punter Mike Rice were cut. "As far as athletic ability, I felt I matched up well with everybody there," he said. "I just felt they (the Jets) weren't really looking for inside linebackers and that they didn't really give me the opportunity that I needed." BUTTE (AP) Former Montana State University linebacker Kirk Timmer, cut last month by the New York Jets, still might end up playing in the National Football League this year. Timmer, who played at Boulder High School, said Thursday he has signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys, but it's effective only if there is a players' strike, which could occur as early as next week. "At first, I told them that I wouldn't do it," Timmer said during a telephone interview.

"But they offered me enough money, so I couldnt afford not to. They're picking up my contract from the Jets." NFL teams said if there is a players strike, they still plan to proceed with the season by using free agents. "It might hurt me later, as far as trying out again," the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Timmer said. "And those players might remember me crossing their picket line."
