"Some of the prop men always want to help me zip it up and down," he says. "I have to tell them, 'No, let me do it. I reed the practice." Sand says he has absolutely no facility for playing musical Instruments but was thrilled when he sat in with the real Boston Symphony while some still photos were shot.

"It's really frustrating because I got to play with them I sat there in the bass section," he says. "They're really nice guys, and the one next to me was very helpful. He would whisper, And this huge orchestra sound coming out it was very thrilling. Once I hit the bow against the bass and Arthur Fiedler said, 'Shut up, please'." Laughs in Big Package Producer Allan Burns hopes to get a few laughs out of scenes of Sand lugging his big friend through the streets of Boston. "It's not funny to see a guy carrying a flute around but, boy, it's funny to see a guy try to lug this thing around," he says.

"It's incongruous." Since Sand will play a bachelor on the show, the bass viol could also become the first musical instrument to double as a love interest. In fact, that's what the producers had in mind. Drawn to Silent Acting Sand knows what's he's doing. A Los Angeles native, he began studying acting at age 11 and became so entranced with a movie called "Children of Paris" that he went to Paris for a year to perform with Marcel Marceau's mime troupe. "I was drawn to silent acting," he says.

"When I would see a movie or play, I was drawn to the actor who wasn't talking at the moment. Those moments can be very moving. "But I'm very uncomfortable being a comedian, trying to make people laugh. I think Marceau is thrilling, but I have no desire to put on whiteface and do that kind of work. I always go totally for the reality.

I just don't like pretending. More and more in my life, I'm trying not to pretend." Pretending, however, won Sand a Tony award in 1971 for his role in "Story Theatre." He's probably the only actor who ever won Broadway's top prize for portraying a dog. DAYTON PUTT PUTT 4B46 N. Main SI. CD High Rollers Now You See It heroin-refining operation on Oahu.
