Ex-officials deny deleting computer files BOZEMAN (AP) Gallatin County commissioners have accused two former county officials of shredding documents and deleting computer files before they left office and of refusing to let independent accountants review financial records.

Former County Auditor Joyce Schmidt and former Personnel Director Kathy Nowierski both deny they did anything illegal, and the independent accounting firm said it was not denied access to the information it requested. However, Bozeman Police detectives are reviewing the allegations at the request of Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert. Schmidt said the papers she shredded before leaving office Dec. 31 were "garbage" and "nothing of importance." Any cleaning up of computer files, which county employees were able to recover, was just routine, she said. Commissioners first heard of the alleged shredding during a Jan.

6 Finance Committee meeting. In" a memo to Lambert, commissioners accused Schmidt of shredding three bags of items in her final days on the job." Commissioners also wrote that Schmidt denied accountants from Anderson Zurmuehlen and a private company hired to scrutinize the county's books, access to public files until Dec. 31. "There was nothing denied to the independent auditor," Schmidt said. "That's when the meeting was set up." Kyla Stafford, an accountant with the firm, confirmed the company had set up a meeting with county officials for Dec.

31, and said accountants were not refused access to files before the meeting. County Commissioner John Vincent said commissioners have asked Lambert to draft a policy making it clear officials are not to shred any documents. 19V JUICE Truck-stop fatality victims identified MILES CITY (AP) Police on Tuesday identified a Great Falls mother and child who were struck and killed by a tractor trailer rig at a truck stop here.
