'elevision DAYTON DAILY NEWS Wednesday, Sept 22. 1982 Page 42 Gold Monkey9 villain for hissing; show is for fun Tom Hopkins 4 We're sitting in a steamy bar in Boragora on Jhe dark side of the South Pacific It's 1938. flie piano tinkles out a tune that fairly drips jwith sentimentality: As Time Goes By. 4 Bon Chance Louie, the moustachioed proprietor, surveys the scene: Assorted drunks, ne'er-do-wells, spies, sailors and smugglers lolling on the fringes of humanity. Jake Cutter, a good-looking blond charter pilot, sports a Flying Tiger patch on his Jacket He's just nursed his Grumman Goose the one with the on-again, off-agaln starboard engine safely into the choppy waters of the lagoon.

Now he's settled into a cutthroat poker game with Monocle, a sinister German officer, and a few other nervous-eyed men. If you think any one of them would slide a knife into Jake's ribs for a handful of American dollars and a ride out of here to Singapore, you're right. They would. AND JAKE'S IN trouble. He's just gambled his dog Jack's jeweled eye away, and Jack's not too happy about it.

Trouble is, the mutt's only method of communication with Jake is a secret code of barks and neither of them can remember whether H's one bark for yes and two for no, or vice versa. An exasperated Jake: "The whole world knows is yes, know Bogie would like them to be. Economic realities suggest that we can expected a scaled-back version when the hour-long series returns next week, but it's a kicky debut Meanwhile, as the sun sets over Boragora, Jack the one-eyed terrier still has a mournful sadness in his eye. Jake: "That little sun of a gun can hold a grudge longer than any woman I've ever met Channel hopping ABC has made its first substitution in the wake of the pro football players' strike, putting the Peter Falk movie The Cheap Detective at 8:30 p.m. Thursday where the Kansas City-Atlanta game was supposed to be WJAI-FM General Manager John Dunn has been promoted by Great Trails Broadcasting and will be going to Milwaukee to be boss of WBCS-AMFM there.

New GM at WJAI, WING'S sister station in Eaton, will be Carl Evans, previously general sales manager at Public TV's Over Easy will tape the final 17 episodes of the upcoming season without Mary Martin, who was seriously injured in a traffic accident in San Francisco recently. Jim Hartz will carry on alone on the series which begins the season in mid-October location in Hawaii; and I thoroughly enjoyed it The show has dashing Stephen Collins as Jake and fine actress named Caitlin 0'-Heaney as Sarah, a chanteusespy. Joining the cast next week is the ubiquitous Roddy McDo-wall as Bon Chance Louie. Oops I almost forgot about Jack. The one-eyed terrier could be television's first canine method actor.

The pilfered eye and the one bark-two bark confusion become droll running gags throughout tonight's movie. As the show opens tonight you might want to shoo the kiddies off to bed. For openers, a pair of Germans looking for a legendary gold statue on the volcanic island of Baku are mutilated by a band of vicious pointy-toothed monkeys. I mean, these simians are mean. Meanwhile, Jake is rescuing a damsel In distress from the clutches of her "manager." So who's the girl? he wonders.

She: "It's Sarah Sarah Stlckney White." i He: "It figures." DISSOLVE TO JAKE and Sarah hopping into the Goose and running into a violent rainstorm. Before it's all over, they're waist deep in German spies, the aforementioned man-eating monkeys, an exploding volcano, a beautiful but deadly princess and a band' of killer samurais. It all winds up a la Raldersln a mountain and 'Ruff is no!" Nearby, sucking on a bottle of booze, is Jake's mechanic Corky, his wits dimmed by too much cheap whiskey. Jake and Corky have been together ever since Corky pulled Jake out of a burning Tri-Motor in Guatemala in '33. Meanwhile, a man in clerical collar squints at them all.

He's the Rev. Willie Tenboom. Willie is really a German intelligence officer. Nobody on Boragora talks much about where they came from and what they've done, and even the whisper from the coconut palms seems to carry a sinister message. ABC's Tales of the Gold Monkey delightfully evokes a dozen movies of the '30s and '40s, but there's also more than a smattering of Raiders of the Lost Ark in tonight's two-hour pilot movie (8 p.m.

on Channel 2). IT'S PROBABLY the most expensive pilot of the fall television season, filmed partly on Collins, OHeaney and Jack cave where the legendary gold Idol is supposed to be stashed. It's all outrageously overacted and fun. The villains are so blackhearted you'll hiss, and the heroes are as tragically flawed as we Prime Time Tonight 2WDTN i WCMH WLWT WTVN WHIO aWCPO iflWBNS iaWKRC ii iaWPTD iaWXTX 00 WKEF WTJC a i WOSU I WKOI I i0 WCET I ABC 9 NBC NBC 0 ABC I CBS CBS 1U CBS lb ABC rHO PBS lj LL NBC 60 in PBS Op PBS 8 .00 Tales Of The Real People Real People Tiles Of The 7 Brides For 7 Brides For 7 Brides For Tales Of The Boheme: Movie: A Real People Zola Levitt Endangered Friedman Ail Creatures Q03 :30 Gold Monkey Gold Monkey 7 Brothers 7 Brothers 7 Brothers Gold Monkey Pavarotd New Leaf" Frederick Species Shockwaves Great Small 0:30 9O0 Movie: "Maid Movie: "Maid Movie: "Maid In Philadelphia K.Price Closing Praise Endangered QOO 30 Family Ties Family Ties In America" la America" la America" Family Ties Discovery Ranks The Lord Species VJO rO0 Dynisty Qnlncy Qnlncy Dynasty Dynasty Going Straight Quincy 700 Club J.CIeason South 1 IUjO A.
