Fourteen Logansport, Indiana, Pharos-Tribune Floods Face Po Valley : - ROVIGO, Italy (UP) — Cloudbursts in the mountains and new leaks in the levees threatened fresh .disaster today for the rich farmlands in the delta of the River Po, Italy's Mississippi. Emergency crews worked in torchlight through the night in the left bank of the Po Di Gnocca, •one of the river's many mouths. 'The breach threatened Porto Tolle, a farming center of 20,000. Meanwhile, torrential downpours in the Alps swelled the Po's tributaries. The Adda, one of the main ' affluents of the Po, rose sharply following a rain and hailstorm*in the Sondrio area, near the Swiss border. It was expected to be several days before the new -masses of •water roaring down the Po's tributaries reach the delta. This meant the flood danger in the area would not be over for another week. No one dared to predict how long the soaked levees still standing in the delta would hold up under the pressure. They have been slowly dissolving in many places. Already under water were an estimated 12,000 acres of farmland In the Ariano area, from which 35,000 farmers were being evacuated. 'The drive to organize the stations came at the height of the controversy over trading stamps and giveaways of gasoline as a means of increasing business. "Ernest Farrell, business agent for Local «4, said the union already had signed up 60 dealers as card-carrying members and it was only a matter of time before the others followed suit. Farrell said his union would "stabilize" the entire gasoline market in 'the rea, eliminate trading stamps and giveaways and put' an end to unprofitable gas wars. He said a contract already signed with some dealers was based on a similar pact now in use in Gary.
