Plans for the rehabilitation of Central park in line with frequent suggestions from THE NEWS were submitted to the bjard of estimate yesterday by Park Com-missionei' Walter R. Herrick. The plans call for an expenditure of approximately $1,000,-00;. This money has been provided by the board. Work -will be begun as soon as the plana have been endorsed ty the mayor's special park committee. Accompanying the plans was a report from Herman W. Merkel, landscape architect and park expert retained by Herrick to work out details of the restoration. In the Merkel report, $167,867 is asked for the employment of additional help to carry out restoration work. Included is a landscape architect at $10,000, three foremen gardeners at S2,500-and number of laborers, climbers and pruners. Among the items are $52,500 for 3.500 new trees; $7,500 for shrubs; S 12,500 for vines; $78,000 for top soil and fertilizer; $1,600 for seed; SI 5,000 for tractors and other machinery; $2,500 for tools; $2,500 for playground equipment; $265,"0 for an Irrigation system; $100,000 for repairs to existing walks; $43,-296 for new walks; $3,000 for benches: $12,350 for orotection: $19,500 for fencing and $20,600 for new playground areas. "I am convinced," Herrick reported, "that Central park can be restored to its original beauttf and it can be made one of the mos . At the present time members of the present force under Police Commissioner Warren are assigned to the park.
