siaiiKeport Storage ponds could pose hazards Groups say toxics could leach into water at 13 Ohio coal waste sites without liners. By John Nolan Staff Writer People living near storage sites for coal waste from coal-burning power generating plants face an increased risk of cancer and other health hazards if toxic chemicals in the waste leak into drinking water sources, environmentalists said, citing a 2007 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency risk assessment. Older coal-ash storage ponds that lack liners to keep the chemicals from leaching into groundwater can pose hazards to humans and aquatic life from exposure to arsenic, boron, cadmium, lead and cobalt, among other toxics, the environmental organizations Earthjustice and Environmental Integrity Project said in a news conference this week. The assessment examined coal waste storage sites around the country.

It cited 13 Ohio sites as possible concerns including storage ponds at the Stuart, Killen, Zimmer, Miami Fort and Beckjord electricity generating plants, located along the Ohio River in southwestern Ohio. Dayton Power Light Co. and Duke Energy are partner-owners in the Stuart, Killen and Zimmer plants. Duke Energy owns the Miami Fort and Beckjord plants. and Duke Energy both said they adhere to state regulation of the coal ash ponds, and also do their own inspections to ensure safe storage of the wastes.

"If there was an issue, we would address it immediately," Duke Energy spokeswoman Johnna Reeder said. ash ponds were designed and constructed under an engineer's supervision and are lined with compacted clay, spokeswoman Lesley Sprigg said. ponds have had no breaches or releases during 30 years of use at Stuart and 25 years at Killen, Sprigg said. operates those plants under the partner agreements. 52-WMk High Low J5lfJ.59 Jl.859.54 3747j15.4"r 15.25 5.22 42.23 8.06 J2.8715.36 6385 46.25 Stock PE Clos Chg.
