Gellendre By BURNS MANTLE. Curious, the accepted importance of the American Laboratory theatre with the local professional fellows of the drama. Let any of the other actor schools announce a production signalizing the end of its year and the introduction of its graduates, and none of the critics pays the least attention. The long-existing Sargent school goes on turning out actors of promise year by year in nicely balanced productions at the Lyceum theatre without getting so much as a tumble from the experts. The more recent Anderson-Milton school moves solemnly about doing this or that thing interestingly and the activity is dismissed with a paragraph.

But let the Laboratory theatre announce in addition to its repertory of plays and the press men, being free, scurry around excitedly hunting taxi cabs to search out the place for them. Couldn't Be the Brewery? Is it the Russian influence, do you suppose? The Boleslavsky trade mark? Or because the work of the Laboratorians is of itself of unique interest? Is it because the theatre is housed in an old brewery (There's a thought!) Or because it plumes itself not unreasonably upon being a production theatre? You might ask Stark Young, or Robert Littell, E. W. Osborne, or Leonard Hall, Alan Dale, or Mark Barron they were all there Wednesday night to see what the students could do with a piece from the French of Jean-Jacques Bernard called "Martine." Open r.ater Monday. A aril titn With the 4rrieiuat Broadway Cuht I Richard Robert Boleslavsky Edmond Jones 'Director and artist. studied, slightly conscious and placidly uninspired reading, as students The play itself is one of those wisps of romance skirting the edge of tragedy that has feeling and a nice sense of character, but little else. It is years in the theatre, not months in a school, that develop the art necessary to the full expression of such a play. Martine is a peasant girl sitting in the shade of an old apple tree.

(Rather goring shade, incidentally.) When along comes Julien. Julien Works Fast. Julien, back from the wars, is struck, then held, then stirred by Martine's beauty and the wave in her hair. He would kiss Martine's ankle to heal it of a hurt. But Julien is engaged.

Or practically engaged, to Jeanne. And when Jeanne comes direct, I suspect, from the Eue de la Paix, smart and wise and froltical, she puts poor Martine back in the shade again. And so in time Jeanne marries Julien and becomes a mamma, and Martine marries Alfred, a dull plod of a farmer, and also has prospects. Unhappy, prospects, however, because she still loves Julien. Of the players, I liked Herbert Gellendre especially.

Having need of an understudy for Luis Alberni I should hire young Mr. Gellendre. Ruth Nelson was nice in the name part, and George Macready helpfully earnest as There is a quizzical note in the playing and a fascinating expression in the eyes, but no feeling for age in the playing of Frances Williams, as a grandmother, and an interesting but slightly stiffish AMUSEMENTS.
