The Billings Gazette Saturday. Dec. 26. 1987 3J) Coach, son fight Down's Syndrome coEmciiiEP series DALLAS (AP) St Louis ParH farm in Paris and the two often go there to ride their horses in the of f-season. "His favorite expression is 'I love to see the farm on a beautiful Stalling said.

"He loves to ride the horses, go fishing, just walk around the farm. People have always been extremely nice to him. Church friends have been so good. "Kids have always played with him. No one has ever made fun of him or didn't allow him to take part." Stallings said he doesn't regret the choice he made 25 years ago.

"We had a tough decision a long time ago," he said. "He was part of our family and we could raise him the best we could. We could keep him warm and healthy and make him ours." Down's Syndrome occurs when a child is born with an extra chromosome in each cell. Children with the condition are mentally retarded, but are able to live happy, active lives. "The doctor he wouldn't live to be 4," Stallings said.

"Then they said he wouldn't make it to 11." Sunday, when the Cardinals visit Texas Stadium to take on the Dallas Cowboys, father and son will be there. "This is the great thing about Johnny," Stalling said. "He still believes in Santa Claus 100 percent He's got a one-way ticket to heaven. There isn't a mean bone in his body." Stallings, born and raised in Texas and a Dallas defensive back coach for 14 years, has a Gene Stallings fainted the day doctors told him his newborn son had Down's Syndrome and wasn't expected to live long. That was 25 years ago and Stallings and his son still are staunch companions.

Stallings was 27 when John Mark Stallings was born on June 11, 1962. As an assistant coach on Bear Bryant's staff at Alabama, his life had been geared to the national championship the Crimson Tide had won less than six months earlier. Then a doctor bluntly broke the news to the coach. "The next thing I knew (was) that I was laying there on the floor with about six or eight nurses around me," Stallings said. "I was out." down pass from Kerwin Bell to Anthony Williams.

But the extra point was missed. Florida drove from its own 13 to the UCLA 20, where Bell threw an in-completion in the end zone as the clock ran out. "I was flushed out (of the pocket by UCLA's Ken Norton had to throw and hope for the best," Bell said. "I felt like he had me and I couldn't take a sack. "It was a joy to play in a bowl game after waiting four years.

We just ran out of time. We got momentum in the fourth quarter, but we couldn't put it in." Florida was playing in its first bowl game since 1983, when the Gators defeated Iowa 14-6 in the Gator Bowl. Florida was ineligible to compete in bowl games following the 1984 and '85 seasons because of NCAA sanctions. "We thought we'd win it near the end, but we didn't," Florida Coach Galen Hall said. "I'm proud of the players, the way they stayed in the game.

They fought hard. It just didn't turn out the way we wanted it to." The Bruins took a 3-0 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Velasco with 8:45 left in the first quarter. The Gators, who finished 6-6, then moved 71 yards on 10 plays to go ahead 7-3. SCCHEBOAnD UCLA From Page ID The Bruins needed to move only 15 yards after David Keating blocked a punt by Florida's Herbert Perry and Randy Beverly returned it 17 yards. "I blocked the ball with my chest," Keating said.

"That's how close I was." Aikman completed 19 of 30 passes for 173 yards and was intercepted twice. He was named UCLA's player of the game. "It's important you finish up with a win," Aikman said. "We're still really disappointed about not going to the Rose BowL I don't think anybody will forget about that. This doesn't make up for the Rose BowL but at least we ended the season with a win." UCLA lost to Southern Cal 17-13 in its regular-season finale on Nov.

21. Thus, the Trojans will represent the Pacific-10 Conference in the Rose Bowl next Friday. The lOth-ranked Bruins, 10-2, also got a 32-yard field goal from Alfredo Velasco with 11:06 left in the game, making it 20-10. The oft-booed Malone, by contrast, has thrown for only six scores and 17 interceptions. "But they've won eight games with Mark Malone at quarterback," Schottenheimer said.
