8 CHURCH AND STATE. Jtahn t'onara Lays Dow a Hla Platfarm Upon "lama." Editors opposed to the mixing of politics and religion, I confined my work for many years to reforming Btate and national politics, leaving church reformation in the hands of Ma chosen leaders, and as long as they followed the legitimate work ot their calling they were not disturbed by me. When they crossed the line of demarcation, however, and entered tbe political anna with a new party labeled "Prohibition," a party that has formed an alliance with the so-called National Reform Association and the American Sabbath Union, and the Christian Temperance Union or Woman's political party, they exposed their hypocrisy to public view. These four divisions represent what might be called Protestant Romanism of the United States of America, as they are upon the Roman platform ol theocracy, and extendiog tiie hand ol fellowship to the Roman Catholics tc join them in a crusade tbat would overthrow civil and religious liberty in this country. At the present time this is the paramount issue in the politics of the country and must be settled before othei issues of less importance that are before Congress.

This is the big issue thai caused me at the beginning of 1839 tc my connections with political parties and go back to the study of ancient history. I wished to see something of the experience of the old world in relation to church and state unions and I found that their so-called Christians bad to travel with the Bible in one hand and the sword in the other. That would doubtless be their best plan of converting sinners in this country if they could establish a theocracy and have the Government furnish tbe sword. This great controversy that has been foisted upon the American people will revolutionise political parties and church creeds more than any other issue that has come up since tbe promulgation of the Declaration oi Independence. The war of the rebellion was fought to decide whether we should have two weak republics, one free and the other with slavery; or one strong free Government.

The present issue is: Shall we have a free Government, of the people for the benefit of the people, guaranteeing civil and religious liberty to all American citizens, or a theocracy that would doubtless be ruled by bigots and hypocrite, with a'Bible in one hand and a sword in the other, and misnamed a Christian nation. Fellow freemen, which side of this great controversy do you propose to take? There is no neutral ground or halting station. I am not the property of any political party or church creed, and they are not responsible for my opinions. I will support the candidates in our approaching election that give prohibition, women voting, church and slate anion with Sunday tyranny, tbe biggest black eye in their platforms and upon the rostrum. Those that have an eye on Washington City, Sacramento or the Los Angeles Court Honse had better be reading up on this great issue.

They will have to meet it and define their position with no uncertain sound. If they are as silent in their political platforms snd upon the rostrum in relation to this overshadowing issue as President Harrison bas been in his late message to Congress, it will look like tbey were in Sympathy with the crusaders that are working to establish an ecclesiastical and stale despotism over what would be the ruins of the grandest republic ever organized by brave men. I am one of the many that voted for President Harrison, and one of the few tbat do not want an office from him, and one of the many that will hold tbe Republican party responsible if it ignore so important a question. The party that takes a firm stand against those conspirators, and settles this question in a way that il can never come up again as a disturbing element in American politics, is the party that will rule this Government for many years to come. Will one of the two great parties meet those conspirators and demand a halt? If they may have to stand aside and give place to a party that will.

The slavery question killed the Whig party and caused the Democrats to go out of business for a quarter of a century. Stranger things have happened than for the Whig party to be resurrected and cause both the treat parties to retire if they fail to respond to the call of American freemen, who have vigilant sentinels on the watch-towers. From Maine to California, from British Columbia to Florida, all eyes are now turned upon Washington City, where the Blair Sunday bill may be called up at any time. We want no secret star chamber or dark lantern work in connection with that bill, which is engineered by the four divisions of the crusaders that have been described in another part of this letter. The American people are indebted to Alonzo T.

Jones, who is well known to the readers of the American Sentinel, for his able defense of civil and religious liberty, and his exposure of tbe gigantic frauds in that so-called fourteen million petition to the United States Senate in favor of the Blair Sunday Best bill. It was demonstrated that if those conspirators were young in political experience, they were experts in colossal trickery. The Prohibition political party is responsible for this mixture of politics and religion. I will help them stir it until the uneducated can distinguish between hypocrisy and religion. It is my intention to discuss this big question through the public press in all its important bearings between this date and the next November election.

John Condra. Whittier, December It. Flower Festival Borne. Skraeidering the fact that a misunderstanding exists in the minds oi some people concerning the Flower Festival Society Boarding Home, by which it is, unfortunately for the ladies residing there, confounded with the "Girls' Home," the managers of the Flower Festival Society wish once more to say to ihe public that the institution conducted nnder the auspices of tbat society is exactly what its name indicates, a boarding home. Tbe young ladies residing there are doing what every honest business man in the city is trying to do, earn their own living.

And to assist them in this effort by giving them at rates within their means the comforts, protection and of a home, tbe ladies of this society, assisted by the generosity of the people, planned, built and carry on the Flower Festival Society Boarding Home. This institution and the Girls' Home are not connected in any way, neither is the matron of either at all connected with or responsible for the management of the other. The Boarding Home is No. 25 East Fourth street, immediately east of the Westminster hotel. Its officers and managers are: Trustees, Jndge B.
