tLY HEIiALD. THE FIRE. rrow Escape from a vere Conflagration I ENTER OF THE CITY. 11l Rookeries on Street Burned in a lew Minutes. it promised to ho serious (ration broke, out last evening jiut 11 o'clock in the Nevada House on South Spring street, doors below First.

This corner ing been an eyesore in the very of the city, being composed of a ler of one-story rookeries, which have been torn down With long since. With the Nadeau on ouo side of the street and tryson Hloek diagonally opposite) rather peculiar that these shanshould have remained so long, when brought into contrast the buildings surrounding. The itarted in the rear portion of the ida Coffee House, ami by the time iiigines had reached the scene the es had spread to the furniture of T. J. Walton adjoining and to real estate otliee of McKee, Hursti it Rut, the commission house of hews Bros, it Parting, Moody's ety store and Ferdinand Iteiche's dry store, which stores were also lpied in part by other real estate is.

The buildings were really th very little except ior kindling and the wonder was that the deportment was able to save any hem from the corner. As soon as as discovered that the fire was eading, the people, of whom there -c many, entered the furniture re and removed the contents 1 furniture to the opposite side the street. While this was ing place tho people flocked the vicinity by the thousand, racted by the brightness of the flames, which made it appear as i more serious conflagration was iv jgress than really was the ease. The ests of the Nadeau Hotel gathered the windows and on the portico and itched the scene with curiosity, hough at one time there was COtf lerable alarm felt as to the safety of at building. The arrival of the dertment and a cooler judgment of the uation by some of the gentlemen on quieted the fears of the more bid, and at 12 o'clock all danger of a rther spread was past.

The fire deirtment arrived on the scene in a rtf short time and the water was put i the fire in a very few seconds. Five iinutes afterward there was danger but what the flames ould be confined to the mits they then occupied. On ue occasion a number of ad reached the top of a flimsy woodn awning, in an effort to direct a ream on the top of the flames, were recipitated to the sidewalk by the iving away of the structure. Shortly fterward several firemen were staniilg in front of the coffee house directlg a stream into the hottest part of le fire when the front wall gave way, overing them with charred wood, no one was hurt, although it as feared that they might have lieen. 'he most valuable stock of goods hich had been in the structures HIIHII was in the jewelry store, but le diamonds and jewelry, valued at were locked up in the safe was uninjured.

Nothing retained outside of this except the locks and show cases, which were trried into a safe place. A considerble iKirtion of the furniture tore was saved in a somewhat damaged condition, but good deal perished in the flames. contents of the Nevada coffee louse were almost entirely destroyed nd those of the variety store were in he same predicament. In considerug the question of damages the mildings do not count since they were cry old. The Nevada coffee house's urniture and fixtures amounted to ibout $500.

T. J. Walton's loss in urniture amounted to about $1000. Ferdinand Reiche lost in clocks md fixtures about $500. The dxx'k in Moody's variety store ivas damaged in about $500.

Matthews and Burting lost about $.500 in damage by fire, smoke and water, and the various real estate firms lost furniture, maps and books valued at about Total oss witiiout the buildings aliout $4000. A slight insurance was listed on some of the places and will partially cover the loss. Officer Moore arrested L. Gilbert for stealing a pair of opera glasses from a show case during the fire. The cause of the fire was the explosion of a gasoline stove kept at the rear of the coffee house for heating purposes.

ALMOST A I'ANIC. About five minutes before the fire broke out last night the last act of Cinderella WM being rendered at the tirand Opera House. This is a spectacular act, and a numlier of Chinese lanterns are suspended and moved up and down from poles overhead. During the swaying of the poles one was dropped and a number of lanterns caught on fire and came very near setting the cloth drop scenery on tire. Many people saw that such a thing was imminent and it caused a timid feeling among the ladies.

A minute later the fire bells sounded and from the windows in the gallery of the theater could be seen the leaping flames. Many people thought the fire was in or adjacent to the theater and started out. Some ladies rushed out with their husbands and a stampede looked probable. Mostly- everybody was excited. Henry Hazard, who was present with'his wife, called to the people to lie seated and his efforts calmed them considerably.

About this time many who saw where the fire was from the gallery also gave good counsel and kept the people seated. "Accidents Seldom Come Single." Tho Hkhai.o yesterday had an accjunt of tlio robbery at l'apago of tlie incoming passenger train on the Sunset Hue in IjOb Angeles on Thursday night, and a notice that the same Express Agent, Charlie Smith, was tlie victim of a previous robbery near tlie same plaoe April 27th last. In addition to these mishaps the unkindest cut of all was when Charlie had almost reached home and was rattling along at a lively rate passingCucamonga station, tlie loeomotivo struck a fiat car that some scoundrel had poshed along the side track so near to the switch that a collision was inevitable. The shock was terrible and Smith, who was writing up his accounts, was thrown violently against the safe severely injuring one of his legs. He was taken to the residence Charles flault, on Tenth street, for surgical treatment.

Mr. (iault the route agent in the car at tho time of the robbery, stopped over at Tucson and escaped the shaking up at Cucamonga An engine was sent out to Cucamonga and brought, in the train aliout eight o'clock yesterday morning. Messenger Smith desires to state that the reported interview published in the Evening Express, between him and a reporter of that journal, never took place. The train did not arrive at 4 o'clock, but at 8 a.m., when he was taken from the CM in a hack by Mr. Charles (iault to Dr.

Worthington's office, where his wounds were dressed, and was then taken to Mr. Qault'g residence, where he now is. The extent of his injuries cannot be determined till to-day. The detectives mentioned in the Express were not in Los Angeles but in San Franclaco. One of them will arrive in Los Angeles this morning.

Leo Harris, who was in Los Angeles went to the front as soon as the robbery was announced. Another Munchausen is about the amount of money stolen, which was really $5000, but the Express states that in the sum stolen there was 180 000 in Mexican silver. Since 30,000 Mexican dollars would weigh about 2500 pounds, idea that the robbers would run away with that amount is in the hightest degree absurd. Such a specimen of imagination is certainly lofty. INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS.

Cities and Towns I by the frozen. Within the past eighteen months the establishment of new centers of trade ami.education in South California is altogether unparalleled in history. Within fifty miles of Los Angeles there have been started within this period the following settlements: On the Southern Pacific Railway the towns of Fillmore, Saugus, Bardsdale, Fernando, Tuni, Paeoima, Dundee, Burbank, Tropico, Aurant, Raniona, Shorb's, Nadeau. the Palms, Almond and Sainsevain have been put under way. On the California Central there have been started: Highland Park, Uarvany.o, Arcadia, Monrovia, Azusa, Gladstone, Glendora, San Dimas, Mud Springs, Lordsburg, Claremont, I'ulomares, North Ontario, North Cucamonga, Ballona, South Kiversi 'c, Fullerton, St.

James, San Sea, Inglewood Satisal Uedondo. Then there are "betweenity" settlements located between the railways such as Fast San Gabriel, Buenavista Park, Whittier, Modjeska, Broad Acres, Cerritos Heights and Rosecrans. In this list are twenty-nine settlements within fifty miles ot Los Angeles all started within a year and a half. Such a specimen of development is not to be found outside of California nor in any other part of California except in Los Angeles county. All these new settlements have people of energy to push them forward and are being pushed in a most successful manner.

Nearly all of these places are having hotels erected and some have half a dozen already built, while others have large hotels in rapid construction. In less than two years these new settlements have made or are causing to be made at least 8000 rooms for guests, and still are planning more rooms for the winter rush of travel. The amount of lumber arriving at San Pedro and San Diego is enormous, but is absorbed in these new settlements as fast as the rapidly rolling trains can bring it. Day ami night the lumber trains shake the earth in every direction and an army of carpenters and joiners ate busy in transforming the fragrant lumber into houses of lieauty and convenience for the while the architects are weary in designing houses of every shape, fashion anil size. During the past year more houses have beeu erected in Los Angeles county than in five years liefore, aud from present appearances more houses will be erected during the next year than in any three years' period before.

Such are "the features of progress in South California in 1887. A JOINT STOCK HOTEL. A Meeting- to be Held on Monday Afternoon. A call has bceu issued for those interested in tlie erection of a large hotel to attend a meeting at the rooms of tlie Board of Trade at It o'clock on Monday afternoon. It is tho opinion of a great many that a large hotel is needed in this city, in fact the llkkai.l) advocated such action some three or four months ago, hut the drawing near of the excursion season and tho fact that there is not enough room in the hotels at present has led others to adopt the same views.

H. Ncwinark, who is visiting in Europe, has written a letter in which he states that I.os Angeles should have at least a million dollar hotel and others who are here seem to think the same way. On Monday afternoon it is probable that a stock company will be formed for tlie purpose of erecting such a building. The following paper has been circulated We, the undersigned citizens interested in tlie erection in Los Angeles of a magnificent hotel to cost not less than $500,000, hereby request all citizens interested to meet in the Board of Trade rooms, in the Baker Block, on Monday afternoon the 15th at 3 p. for the purposo of devising ways and means of carrying out so interesting an enterprise: M.
